Wednesday fans are going to get the same amount of Tim Burton in Season 2 as they did in Season 1. Co-creator Alfred Gough has confirmed how many episodes Burton will direct for the Netflix show’s sophomore season.
Gough recently sat down with Collider to discuss Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which he scripted with Wednesday‘s other co-creator Miles Millar, and the forthcoming second season of Wednesday. When asked how many episodes Burton was directing in Season 2, Gough confirmed that he would once again be “doing four. He’s doing half the season like he did in Season 1.” However, the co-creator did not reveal which exact episodes Burton would be helming. In Season 1, he directed the first four episodes, while Gandja Monteiro (Episodes 5 & 6) and James Marshall (Episodes 7 & 8) helmed the remainder.
Wednesday marked the first television project Burton had directed episodes for since 2000. Gough explained that Burton’s love for both the show and series lead Jenna Ortega is what got him to come back for Season 2. “He just loves the show, and he loves doing it and loves working with Jenna, and it’s great. Believe me, we’re thrilled because I’m with you, I would’ve thought he’d be like, ‘I did it. Peace out.’ Yeah. No, he doesn’t do that,” the co-creator shared. “I think when he loves something… This is the thing, he’s not cynical at all. And I think that’s the other reason Beetlejuice has worked, because he didn’t make it for any other reason than he wanted to make that movie. He wanted to tell that story. There is nothing cynical. It is completely Tim. … I can’t think of any other filmmaker like him.”
Wednesday Season 2 Is Currently in Production
The first season of Wednesday debuted on Netflix in November 2022, following Wednesday Addams as she attends Nevermore Academy while attempting to master her emerging psychic ability, stop a monstrous killing spree terrorizing the local town of Jericho, and solve a 25-year-old mystery. Season 1 was a massive success for Netflix, repeatedly breaking Nielsen records for streaming viewership. A second season was ordered in January 2023 and began production in May 2024. “We are about halfway through production [on Season 2,]” revealed Gough to Collider, meaning that filming will likely not wrap until closer to the end of the year.
Who Stars in Wednesday Season 2?
Besides Ortega, returning cast members for Wednesday Season 2 include Emma Myers, Joy Sunday, Hunter Doohan, Victor Dorobantu, Moosa Mostafa, and Georgie Farmer. Additionally, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, and Isaac Ordonez, who were guest stars in Season 1 as Wednesday’s mother Morticia, father Gomez, and brother Pugsley, respectively, have all been upped to series regulars for Season 2. Fred Armisen will also be back as Uncle Fester, while Steve Buscemi, Thandiwe Newton, Christopher Lloyd, Haley Joel Osment, Heather Matarazzo, and Joonas Suotamo are among the new additions to the series for Season 2.
The first season of Wednesday is currently streaming on Netflix, while a release window for Season 2 has not yet been announced.
