Eminem returned earlier this year with his latest album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce). The rapper’s new offering debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, helping him add to his collection of chart-toppers. As that title continues to descend very slowly, the musician’s most successful compilation reaches a very special milestone.
Curtain Call: The Hits is celebrating this frame. Eminem’s first collection of his biggest and most popular singles has now spent 700 weeks on the Billboard 200, Billboard’s ranking of the most-consumed full-lengths in the country.
Only a very small number of albums have reached 700 weeks on the Billboard 200 throughout history. Eminem is just the sixth musician to hit that momentous number, and all six of the names above him have each seen just one title make it to that sum.
At present, the record for the most time spent on the Billboard 200 is still held by Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon. That rock masterpiece will soon become the first release to make it to 1,000 frames on the tally–if it can just return and hold on for 10 more stretches.
In between Pink Floyd and Eminem come a handful of the most successful artists–and albums–in American history. That list includes Bob Marley and the Wailers’ Legend (851 weeks), Journey’s Greatest Hits (821), Metallica’s self-titled release (758), and Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Chronicle: The 20 Greatest Hits (710), which have all already passed 700 turns somewhere on the roster.
Curtain Call is the first hip-hop album of any kind to make it to that figure, and it won’t be matched for some time. Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid, M.A.A.D City ranks as the second-longest-charting title by anyone in the hip-hop space, and it still has a long way to go before reaching 700 weeks. The Grammy winner’s breakout success story is nearing 620 turns on the tally.
This week, Eminem’s set falls, losing quite a bit of ground. Last frame, it sat at No. 43, where it stayed for more than one stint. Now, it slips to No. 80. The compilation ranks among Eminem’s list of 11 No. 1s on the Billboard 200.
