The producers of The Lord of the Rings trilogy directly responded to those competing with The Rings of Power with TWO WORDS: “Game over”

One original Lord of the Rings movie trilogy writer is speaking out on rumors surrounding her team and the team behind Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series. Per GamesRadar+, Philippa Boyens, who also serves as a producer on The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim and the upcoming live-action film The Hunt for Gollum, said expanding on J.R.R. Tolkien’s universe is a good thing.

“I have this belief and I hope it’s true in terms of The Rings of PowerI think being able to expand upon the world is only a good thing,” Boyens said.

I think being able to expand upon the world is only a good thing.

She added, “I particularly love that particular piece of Middle-earth history. Some people seem to think there is a rivalry or conflict between the projects, but there is absolutely not and I don’t believe there is from their part either.” Boyens continued that all of the projects “should complement each other. Let’s have more Tolkien, can you ever have too much?”

The animated The War of the Rohirrim is produced by Boyens along with Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, from the original trilogy and is currently in theaters. The Hunt for Gollum, which will be directed by Andy Serkis, is set for a release sometime in 2026.

Amazon’s Rings of Power Renewed for Season 3

The Rings of Power was recently given the green light for a third season and its showrunners, J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay say it’s going to be “awesome.” Payne confirmed that they are “working on it,” but McKay added that was all they could say. “It’s gonna be really good. We’re excited,” Payne said.

McKay said there is a “technicality” in Tolkien lore that the One Ring was made before the fall of Eregion. He told The Direct that to accomplish that feat in Season 2, “Sauron would have had to have left his storyline, gone off to Mordor and make the One Ring, and then come back, and we deemed it a bridge too far.

Instead, McKay said they used Tolkien’s The Ring Poem which he said, “To our minds, is probably the order that most readers and viewers are familiar with from either Peter (Jackson’s) films or The Lord of the Rings proper, and that rationale, we think is serving the show well.”

The Animated Story has had Mixed Reviews

The War of the Rohirrim has received a lukewarm reception from critics thus far. It is a prequel to the Lord of the Rings and tells the story of Helm Hammerhand and his daughter Hera and is narrated by Éowyn (Miranda Otto). Some critics have given praise for the animation style and its battle scenes, but others say it is at odds with the aesthetic that fans are used to with the Peter Jackson films.

The Rings of Power is streaming its first two seasons on Prime Video. The War of the Rohirrim is currently in movie theaters.
