Rise up, Keri Russell hive! The Diplomat has been renewed for a third season. Netflix confirmed the news in early October, with Variety reporting that production on season 3 has already begun. This time, our favorite diplomats will travel back to America.
Series creator Debora Cahn revealed the location switch earlier this month. “After an amazing summer shooting in the UK, we brought London home to N.Y.,” Cahn told Variety. “Best of both worlds—filming in Brooklyn. We love doing this. We’re so excited to get to keep going.”
I’m stoked to watch the team navigate New York living. Will Kate and Dennison have early-morning bodega runs and subway planning sessions? Honestly, I can’t wait to find out. That said, I shouldn’t get ahead of myself—season 2 hasn’t even premiered yet. The next batch of episodes drops on October 31, when viewers will reenter the dizzying world of U.S. diplomat Kate Wyler (Russell). In case you forgot, season 1 ended with an explosive car bomb—and in season 2, Kate tries to find the culprit.
Check out the logline:
A deadly explosion in the heart of London shatters U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler’s world. Struggling to rebuild the lives that broke and the team that split apart, Kate’s worst fears unfold. The attack that brought her to the UK didn’t come from a rival nation, it came from inside the British government. As Kate chases the truth, her only real ally is her almost ex-husband Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), very much alive, and very much involved. She faces a fraught marriage, a complex dynamic with British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), and a threatening visit from Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney).
All six episodes premiere on Halloween—and, yes, you read that correctly, there are only six episodes in season 2. The reason for that is more straightforward than you’d expect. Cahn told TVLine that she trimmed the season so that she could produce it quickly. “It was my decision,” she said. “[Netflix] was not happy. They wanted the full eight….I was really tired. It was a time thing. It felt like there wasn’t enough time to turn around eight of them. It was a lot to do in what appeared to be a short period of time.”
Hopefully, this means Cahn has more time to flesh out the next season. Netflix has not released a premiere date yet, but if we’re lucky, season 3 will be here before we know it. Until then, you can find me rooting for Ms. Wyler.
