Rings of Power raises major questions for fans about the Nine RingsIn the most recent episode of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Amazon, “Doomed to Die,” Celebrimbor, an Elven smith, revealed Sauron’s deceit intended to persuade him to craft the nine rings of power for Men. Celebrimbor finished the nine rings for Men that he was afraid to construct in a mental prison where he was free from outside influences.

He didn’t see Annatar for the Dark Lord Sauron that he truly was until he observed how little things were constantly circling him, like a mouse in his workshop doing the same things over and over. However, it’s too late by now. Celebrimbor’s supporters now believe Sauron has turned him insane, and Adar and his army are encircling Eregion.
Relentlessly Aficionados of J.R.R. Tolkien are aware that the nine kings of Men who obtain the rings would eventually turn into the Ringwraiths, also known as the Nazgûl, in The Lord of the Rings. The shadowy, cloaked individuals who followed Frodo around during his quest to destroy Sauron’s One Ring. However, once Galadriel takes custody of the rings at the end of Episode 7, Rings of Power has left viewers with one unanswered question: How are Men going to get hold of them?
In The Silmarillion, Tolkien Provided a More Comprehensive Account of the Nine Rings of Power
The prologue of Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring provides a synopsis of the distribution of each ring to viewers. The script made sure to highlight a unique feature of every race in Middle-earth that received the rings. According to the description, elves are “immortal, wisest, and fairest of all beings.” It is said of the Dwarves that they are “great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls.” Only men’s descriptors are associated with negative connotations. As the storyteller, Galadriel, puts it, “above all, [they] desire power.”
Famously, Tolkien’s verse-written prologue listed the number of rings bestowed upon each race and gave a brief description of each. Men are three, Dwarves are seven, and Elves are nine. That poem’s pertinent passage is “Nine for Mortal Men, doomed to die.” This poem’s sentence serves as the inspiration for Rings of Power, Episode 7’s title. There was danger in placing this much power in the hands of men, as Jackson’s prologue suggested. Not even Men who were formerly favoured by Elves, like the Númenoreans, who are envious of Elves’ immortality.
More detail was provided than in The Lord of the Rings regarding the construction of the nineteen rings in Tolkien’s posthumously published work. In the final chapter of The Silmarillion, “Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age,” Tolkien related how the rings were forged in Erebia and how the elves learned of Sauron’s scheme. Similar to the Rings of Power, Sauron’s first persona was that of Annatar, Lord of Gifts. As soon as the Elves learn who he is, they move to protect the rings. He launches an attack on them out of rage. He retrieves the seven made for Dwarves and the nine made for Men throughout this fight.
Some of these events have been rearranged by Rings of Power, taking some liberties. The Dwarves have their nine rings by the time the rings are fashioned for Men, which drives Durin III, King of Khazad-dûm, further insane. Men received the nine rings from Sauron, according to Tolkien’s writing. Númenoreans and the eastern kingdoms of Middle-earth were included in this act. With just one episode remaining, there might not be much chance for viewers to witness the kings’ transformation into Ringwraiths or the distribution of the nine rings across the realms of men. Perhaps J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, the showrunners, will save that descent for Season 3. However, it would be intriguing to sample those at least.

A Significant Question About the Nine Rings for Men Is Raised in Rings of Power Episode 7
At the conclusion of Rings of Power’s Season 2, Episode 7, a more significant query is how Sauron plans to reclaim the nine rings. The scenario that remains for viewers is one in which Celebrimbor managed to give Galadriel the nine rings before Sauron realised. Canonically speaking, it appears that Eregion is destined to fall with his kingdom rather than departing from it. Tolkien elaborated on Celebrimbor’s destiny in Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-earth. Celebrimbor was coerced by Sauron into telling him where the other rings were, but he would not tell him where the three Elven rings were. Eventually, he passed away from his wounds, and Sauron had his corpse carried about in front of the other Elves.
Perhaps the Season 2 finale of Rings of Power will mark the conclusion of Celebrimbor’s saga. Given that Tolkien’s character is so near to dying, it would seem logical from a logistical one not to bring Charles Edwards back for a second season. Though it is depressing to think about, Edwards has played the Elven artisan with dedication and excellence. It is important for viewers to prepare for a depressing yet maybe happy ending for Celebrimbor. The Elven lord had a very interesting storyline in the program, one in which Sauron was able to appeal to his ego in order to get the rings made. Maybe different from Tolkien, but no different than what Jackson did to give his own characters more depth in his films.
After the nine rings end up in the hands of men, there’s still a lot of ground to traverse. Should the show writers adhere to Tolkien’s pattern, it’s plausible that Celebrimbor may reveal Galadriel’s location in his last moments, putting her in direct confrontation with Sauron once more. But perhaps Celebrimbor’s conclusion will turn out differently because it appears like the creators sincerely want the audience to feel sympathy for him and his character, even in spite of his bad decisions. In any case, it’s quite plausible that Sauron will possess the nine rings by the end of Episode 8. Furthermore, it might even happen that viewers could observe how terror grows in Númenor as a result of Pharazôn using the seeing stone.
There are moments when dramatic effect calls for rewriting Tolkien in Rings of Power
Much of Tolkien’s work has been adapted for the film for various reasons, as admirers of his universe have witnessed, whether favourable or unfavourable. Jackson provided detailed justifications for several of his alterations in the behind-the-scenes DVDs included in the Lord of the Rings box set releases after his films were finished in the early 2000s. Years after the original novel’s publication, one could claim that The Hobbit movies made significantly more changes and had less authenticity. Unfortunately, many of the uneven aspects of The Hobbit trilogy may be traced back to production issues and a short schedule. Allowing viewers to have a little bit more flexibility. However much Jackson changed Tolkien’s writing, he still appears to be really preferred over McKay and Payne by a significant segment of the fan base.
For a long time, Tolkien’s works were deemed unsuitable for film, regardless of how well-liked they were by those who read them. Jackson acknowledged that he was embarking on an enormous undertaking in the same behind-the-scenes interviews that are featured on his DVDs. Additionally, Payne and McKay must construct a significant amount of the story framework themselves because Tolkien never finished a large portion of the material they are working with. Creating people and entire storylines out of what may be merely regarded as encyclopaedic books is no easy task, let alone taking on Tolkien.
Christopher Tolkien, the son of Arthur Tolkien, was well-known for thinking that Jackson’s films turned his father’s books into corny action flicks. But in the more than two decades since its release, they have managed to establish themselves as beloved classics. Maybe when everything settles and people realise that Rings of Power is an unbeatable cinematic achievement, that’s what will happen to it as well.
