The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes star Rachel Zegler has revealed the surprising character she would want to play if she joined the Star Wars franchise.

With an animated Star Wars series based on Marvel’s What If…? format rumored to be in development, Zegler jokingly posted on X that she wanted to see an episode focused around “what if somehow palpatine returned” — a playful jab at an unpopular line of dialogue from the 2019 film Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The actor then shared “as a fan of the comics i would like to throw my hat in the ring to voice shara bey, mother of poe dameron, because her ship was an RZ-1 (my initials!) for green squadron.” At this time, it is worth noting that Lucasfilm has not officially announced a new Star Wars series based on Marvel Studios’ What If…? format.

Who Is Shara Bey?

Shara Bey first appeared in the comic book miniseries Star Wars: Shattered Empire, which was published by Marvel Comics in 2015. Shara Bey was a skilled pilot and rebel fighter who, along with her husband Sergeant Kes Dameron, joined the Rebellion after realizing that the Empire was corrupt. She fought in the Battle of Endor, acting as a fighter pilot. Afterward, she worked closely with the New Republic to hunt down the Imperial remnant before her death six years after the Battle of Endor. She was also the one who taught her son, Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), how to fly.

While Shara Bey has gone on to appear in other Star Wars comics and novels, the character has not yet made the jump to animation or live-action. At the time of writing, Lucasfilm has several new projects in development, including a new film set 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Daisy Ridley will reprise her role from the Star Wars sequel trilogy as Rey Skywalker, who is a friend and ally of Poe Dameron.

Rachel Zegler Is on an Acting Hot Streak

Zegler made her film debut playing María in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story remake. The actor received rave reviews for her performance, going on to win the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical. Her next role was in the DC Extended Universe movie, Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023), acting opposite Zachary Levi’s title superhero, followed by a starring role in The Hunger Games prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (2023). Her next role will be in Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs where she will play the title princess. The hotly-anticipated project, scheduled for extensive reshoots later this year, will open in theaters in 2025.
