Peter Dinklage’s ‘lonely’ experience filming Wicked apart from the rest of the cast

Why am I actually about to cry right now

Wicked has had huge success since its release, and the stars of the iconic cast have undoubtedly been Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. Their wholesome friendship, the holding space meme, and Cynthia’s Target advert have overshadowed many of the other characters. Peter Dinklage spoke about his time filming Wicked and how he felt very isolated during the whole experience. Grab your tissues because you’re definitely about to cry reading this.

Wait, Peter Dinklage was in Wicked?!

If you’re like me, you may not have even realised that Peter Dinklage was in fact a huge part in filming Wicked. He was the voice of the goat professor, Doctor Dillamond, who was facing oppression and discrimination under the Wizard’s orders. I had no idea he was the voice of the character, probably due to the fact that he hasn’t been doing any promo or involved with the press tour, which has heavily focused on Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.

His ‘lonely’ experience recording his part for Wicked

His absence from the Wicked promo could be explained by his experience when making the film. He spoke about how it was “a bit of a lonely process,” that had him “recording in a sound booth apart from the rest of the cast.”

“But, it’s such an honour to be part of something this universally loved and amazingly creative. My daughter has seen the Broadway show five times, and her friends still want to go for every birthday party,” he told Cinema Express.

Peter explained that Wicked resonates because “everyone feels like an outsider at some point,” including himself.

“It’s about defining your independence and strength within that feeling of isolation. Above all, it teaches kindness, which is the most important thing.”

He added: “Elphaba’s story of finding her strength resonates with me. I’ve taken ownership of my physical uniqueness as an actor. I’ve turned it into something empowering. People might look at me, but now it’s for the right reasons—because they’ve seen something they enjoyed. That’s a strength that comes from owning who you are.”

Seriously, if Peter Dinklage was in my film cast we’d be out for drinks EVERY NIGHT. Did the producers not realise the icon standing before them?! Time to watch Wicked a slightly more depressing light I guess.
