Outer Banks star Chase Stokes turned down a ‘bro workout’ with Chris Hemsworth and Arnold Schwarzenegger

Chase Stokes has pulled off a number of daring feats playing teen treasure hunter John B. on Outer Banks. But joining famously buff fellow actors Chris Hemsworth and Arnold Schwarzenegger in the gym for a “bro workout?” That’s officially too much.

Stokes recently explained on The Tonight Show that he was in Brazil hosting Netflix’s annual Tudum fan event when he went into the hotel gym, “and guess who’s just hanging out in the gym doing gym things? Chris Hemsworth and Arnold Schwarzenegger.”

“That’s too much man for me,” Fallon joked. Stokes agreed, saying they were “just having a bro workout in Brazil, just doing dude things. So I kind of look over and Chris is like, ‘Hey, man, want to join in?’ And I’m like, ‘No, no. I’m so good. I’m just gonna go do some yoga, a little mindful breathing. I’m gonna hit the treadmill actually.’ I sprinted out.”

Stokes has starred on Netflix’s hit adventure drama Outer Banks since 2020. The North Carolina-set series has made stars of once-unknown actors like Madelyn Cline, Drew Starkey, and Stokes. As a thank-you for his efforts, Netflix rewarded him with an offer to host Tudum, an offer he wasn’t too pleased to accept.

“I’m arguably the worst person to host anything,” he told Fallon. “I have the worst social anxiety.” Stokes was at least partly relieved by cohosts Maisa Silva and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, who introduced flashy stars of buzzy upcoming Netflix projects to the crowd of adoring fans. Hemsworth and Schwarzenegger were two of those stars, taking the Tudum stage to promote Extraction 2 and FUBAR.

“They had me intro Chris Hemsworth,” Stokes recalled, “and they gave me the script and I’m sitting backstage with the mic and I’m like, ‘Hi I’m Chris Hemsworth. I’m Thor, God of Thunder.'”

Doing his best Hemsworth impression, Stokes said Netflix staff quickly “came up to me and they were like, ‘Hey you should stop.'” When he asked why, “They were like, ‘Chris just entered the building, and you’re on the loudspeakers.’ And I was like, ‘Oh s—.'”

The overheard impression was the cherry on top of the embarrassment sundae that melted into a puddle when Stokes encountered Hemsworth at the gym with the Terminator himself. But he described Hemsworth backstage as a total gentleman, telling Stokes taht “‘the kids love the show.'” Stokes told Fallon he “could not stop staring at this gorgeous human being. The biceps are insane… It’s like the perfect human specimen.”

Stokes’ Outer Banks character, John B. Routledge, has never needed bulk or brawn to maneuver out of all sorts of sticky situations, from being framed for killing a cop to rescuing his kidnapped girlfriend in the Bahamas. Season 4 of the series will catch up with the John B. and his friends’ fight for their lives while trying to make a home of Poguelandia 2.0. The first five episodes will drop Oct. 10., with episodes 6 through 10 following on Nov. 7.
