To make matters worse, JJ loses the gold reserved for property taxes in a motorbike race, leaving them thousands of dollars in debt. The financial bind motivates the Pogues to seek out Blackbeard’s treasure, a plot originally set up during the Outer Banks season 3 finale. Jonathan Daviss and Carlacia Grant, who portray Pope and Cleo, tease plenty of clashing within the group but believe that trusting each other is crucial for the friends to accomplish their new goal.
Screen Rant interviews Daviss and Grant about Pope and Cleo’s romance and friendships, as well as the advice they’d give the Pogues in Outer Banks season 4.
Pope And Cleo Broke Down Each Other’s Walls In Outer Banks
“I think they were kind of skeptical about each other.”
Screen Rant: If you went on a treasure hunt, and you ended up with the same amount of gold as the Pogues, what is the first thing that you would buy?
Carlacia Grant: I think it matters in what part of the world I am, but if I’m in L.A., I’m going to get a seafood tower while I deliberate what I’m going to do with this newfound money. I need to think about it. But what’s [a better way] to think about it than over a nice, delicious meal?
Jonathan Daviss: I’d build myself a bat cave.
When we first met Cleo, I never imagined that she and Pope would wind up together, but they are such a great pair. What is it that you think really draws them to one another?
Carlacia Grant: I think it’s their love for one another, their compatibility. They’re really compatible together. It’s like the Yin and Yang thing. She loves the way that he protects her. He looks out for her. He’s just a standup guy for her. He has loved her in ways that I don’t think she’s experienced in her life, and he accepts her flaws, she accepts his flaws. It’s just genuine.
Jonathan Daviss: Yeah. I always say that Pope sees in Cleo a lot of the characteristics that he wishes he had. She’s capable, she’s confident in herself. Coming off his last relationship and swearing off love, both having done that based on their past, I think they were kind of skeptical about each other, but slowly they broke down each other’s walls, and they saw the vulnerability and fell into a really nice relationship, and they play off of each other really, really well. They’re funny with each other. They’re very compatible, and it’s really cute to see.
Cleo has made such a great addition to the group. Outside of Pope, who do you feel she has the closest relationship with in season 4?
Carlacia Grant: Heyward because they spend so much time at the restaurant, and he’s a father figure for her, and he has a fishing business, and she’s there teaching him recipes and stuff. So they spend a lot of time together, and I think he gives her a hard time, but she likes it. They have a good tit-for-tat thing going on there.
Daviss Jokes That The Pogues “All Share One Brain Cell”
“They’re friends, and I feel like all of them have done something really stupid for no reason, so they kind of share that with each other.”
Pope is very much a person who likes to think everything through, and I love how JJ is the polar opposite of that. There’s been a little bit of clashing, and I’m curious what that’s going to look like now that we have a new treasure hunt on the horizon.
Jonathan Daviss: Same old, same old. It’s the same old JJ and Pope. It’s the same clash they’ve been having since the first season. They’re friends, and I feel like all of them have done something really stupid for no reason, so they kind of share that with each other. When Pope’s separate from them, he’s smart, but when they’re together, they all share one brain cell. That transition’s kind of funny.
What do you feel Cleo and Pope learned from the first treasure hunt that they can now bring into the second one?
Carlacia Grant: I think it’s to trust each other more. Definitely rely on each other more. Don’t get caught up in other theories and stories. I think more research. I think we researched the last one more, but maybe more research and have more fun.
Jonathan Daviss: [Laughs] Have more fun.
Carlacia Grant: Have more fun.
Jonathan Daviss: Try not to die more.
Carlacia Grant: Yeah, try not to die more.
About Outer Banks Season 4
Created by Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke
Following last season’s 18-month flash-forward showing Wes Genrette’s proposal for the Pogues to find Blackbeard’s treasure, Season 4 takes us back in time to the lead-up of that moment. After finding the gold at El Dorado, the Pogues return to the OBX and commit to having a “normal” life. They’ve built themselves a new safe haven, officially dubbed “Poguelandia 2.0”, where they live together and run a fairly successful bait, tackle, and charter tour shop.
But after some financial setbacks, John B, Sarah, Kiara, JJ, Pope, and Cleo take Wes up on his offer, drawn back into the “G” game for a whole new adventure. But before they know it, they’re well in over their heads, with dangerous new enemies hot on their heels racing them to the treasure. Meanwhile, their problems are only growing, and they’re forced to question their past, present, and future – who they really are, has it all been worth it, and how much are they willing to risk?
