Netflix announces second season of Black Doves after first episode of Keira Knightley-starring thriller series hits royals

Netflix has renewed Black Doves for a second season after the first season of the thriller series became a hit with fans – and even royalty!

The six-part spy thriller series stars Keira Knightley as Helen Webb, the wife of the Secretary of State for Defence, who learns that her secret identity as a Black Dove is in danger after her lover is killed by London‘s underworld.

It was an instant hit, flying to the top of the charts as viewers dubbed it a ‘Christmas series’ and it even made it to Kensington Palace.

Whilst handing out Christmas presents to children and families at a party for 1st Battalion Mercian Regiment in Wiltshire, Prince William revealed he and Princess Catherine have been sitting down to watch Black Doves.

The X account for Netflix posted a 30-second clip of Keira, 39, as her character Helen Webb and Ben Whishaw, 44, as Sam Young, together at a bar.

In the clip, Keira approaches Ben and whispers ‘Merry Christmas’ in his ear, to which he replies ‘Hello darling’ as the two share a hug.

Breaking the fourth wall, Keira raises her champagne glass says: ‘Here’s to Black Doves season one.’

Clinking his glass against hers, Ben replies: ‘Don’t forget season two, darling.’

The pair then retrieve two golden bullets from little red envelopes and simultaneously drop them in their champagne glasses before the title screen appears and the clip ends.

Despite featuring spies, murders and assassins, the show has been labelled a ‘Christmas series’ by delighted viewers, who claim the festive soundtrack and setting gave them the ‘Christmas feels’.

It scored a perfect 100 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes just one day after its launch.

Set in London in December, ahead of the big day, the thriller follows Keira’s character Helen Webb as an agent passing on secrets she’s managed to uncover from her politician husband (Andrew Buchan) to the Black Doves organisation.

Helen has been giving the firm – headed up by the enigmatic Reed (Sarah Lancashire) – political information for 10 years, but her position is compromised after the mother-of-two’s secret lover Jason (Andrew Koji) is assassinated.

Viewers have praised Sarah Lancashire’s acting in the new show, calling the Happy Valley star ‘incredible’ and ‘a national treasure’.

There is no release date for Black Doves season two yet but fans will be glad to know it has been renewed.

Despite receiving rave reviews since it landed on the streaming service earlier this month, viewers couldn’t resist mocking one particular scene.

The scene in question sees Keira’s character puffing on a vape as she reminisces about her late lover, as a flashback plays out.

Sharing the clip on X, formerly known as Twitter, someone wrote: ‘They’re saying it’s the most mournful vape hit ever to be shown on Netflix,’ and others were quick to comment.

‘They want vaping to look as cool as cigarettes did in the 90s,’ one person claimed.

Another replied and said: ‘Vapes just won’t give the vibe that cigarettes has.’

A third person suggested: ‘They would’ve been more successful making a dramatic scene if they made her frantically find a lost vape instead (sic).’

And a fourth X user commented: ‘We’re living in a timeline where “tragic vape hits” might be an Emmy category. I love it here and hate it here simultaneously.’

However, someone else pointed out: ‘Well, smells do evoke memory so it would work. Still cringe.’
