The Duchess of Sussex made an impromptu visit to a new bookstore, Godmothers, near Montecito
Meghan Markle added a dash of charm to her recent bookstore outing.
The Duchess of Sussex was spotted leaving Godmothers, a new bookstore in Summerland, California, near her Montecito home, on Sept. 2.
Dressed casually in a large straw sun hat, navy Anine Bing sweater, her gold Cartier Juste un Clou necklace and Ray-Ban aviators, Meghan seemed to be enjoying a sneak peek at the new shop co-owned by literary agent Jennifer Rudolph Walsh and cosmetics mogul Victoria Jackson, ahead of its official opening.
As she left the bookstore, Meghan, 43, was seen sporting a leather matchbook keychain by Anya Hindmarch. The $310 keyring, designed with a whimsical touch, mimics a matchbook and is embossed with a charming reminder to “Take What You Need,” offering uplifting words like hugs, love, patience and a smile.
On Sept. 7, Meghan spoke at the opening weekend event for Godmothers, which also saw a guest appearance by her friend Oprah Winfrey. In her remarks, she thanked the bookstore’s founders “for not just creating the space, but for holding the space for so many people to feel seen through the pages, either in laughter, in grief, in feeling less alone,” according to Town & Country.

On Sept. 6, Meghan and Prince Harry attended the bookstore’s friends and family event. The store’s “Our Local Authors” display features the Duke of Sussex’s best-selling memoir, Spare, and Meghan’s 2021 children’s book, The Bench.
Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, also made an appearance at the bookstore’s friends and family party on Sept. 6. The Duke of Sussex’s best-selling memoir, Spare, and Meghan’s 2021 best-selling children’s book, The Bench, are both featured in the store’s “Our Local Authors” display.
According to Town & Country, it was Harry who inspired the name for the bookstore. At his book party for Spare in Beverly Hills, he thanked Winfrey, Jackson and Rudolph Walsh for their support, calling the three his “fairy godmothers.” As plans for the store began to fall into place, Winfrey told the two founders, “There’s really only one thing you can name it: Godmothers.”
