Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has once again hit the headlines after netizens spotted him wearing the world’s thinnest mechanical watch in a video he posted on Instagram. The Bulgari Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC has a thickness of just 1.7mm and is thinner than two stacked credit cards.
The Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC is priced at $590,000 (over Rs 5 crore), with only 20 pieces available. Each watch is accompanied by a specially designed case that automatically sets and winds it. With this watch, Bulgari has managed to fit all 170 components which the watch functions on within its case.
World’s thinnest watch: Challenges
In an interaction with The Indian Express, watch enthusiast and digital growth marketer Mehul Bhagwani explained the challenges of making such a watch.
Bhagwani said that creating such an engineering marve is not just about shrinking the parts but rethinking how a watch is made. “Traditional movements stack components vertically, but that approach doesn’t work in something this thin. Bulgari had to go horizontal, spreading the components across a flat plane,” he said.
He further talked about the strength of the watch. He said that when the parts are as thinnas 0.1mm, they are inherently fragile. Hence, every tiny piece has to be made to stand the wear and tear. Misalignment poses a significant risk when structural supports are reduced. In such cases, precision isn’t just important—it’s essential.
