Mike Tyson will make a sensational return to the boxing ring this week to take on Jake Paul but Manchester City fans have one big reason for wanting to see him lose the match.
It’s been a rough couple of weeks for Manchester City who have now lost four games in a row for the first time under Pep Guardiola.
After suffering a thrashing at the hands of Sporting in the Champions League, City slumped to another defeat after starting a game well and taking the lead against Brighton on Saturday.
But as they say, ‘it ain’t about how hard you’re hit, it’s about how you can get hit and keep moving forward,’ and the Blues are by no means out for the count just yet.
From one cult boxing icon to another, ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson makes his remarkable return to the ring on Friday at the age of 58.
The legendary world heavyweight champion will be coming to blows with social media star turned celebrity boxer Jake Paul in a blockbuster clash.
The fight is bound to dominate headlines for the next week but City fans have a good reason to want to see Tyson lose the bout after his previous put down of the club in 2013.
Mike Tyson made a dig at Manchester City in 2013
Though City were not the dominant force and treble-winners that they are today, they had won their first Premier League title by 2013 and had established themselves as one of England’s biggest teams.
Yet, Tyson claimed he had never heard of the club when he sat alongside famous City fan and fellow boxer Ricky Hatton in a joint interview on The Clare Balding Show.
Hatton was explaining that several members of his family, including himself, had played for City in some capacity before Tyson interrupted to ask: “So what’s the difference, I don’t mean to interrupt, between Manchester City and Manchester United?”
Balding was aghast at the question, while Hatton replied: “I think Manchester City are the best in the village, we’re sworn enemies in Manchester.
Tyson – who fought in Manchester in 2000 in a win against Julius Francis – continued: “I’ve been in Manchester for a long period of time and I’ve never heard of Manchester City,” as Balding gasped in shock.
“The first time I heard about Manchester City was because of Manchester United.”
Hatton laughed off the remarks, saying “we’ve only just become good, truth be known’, but host Balding could not hide her surprise at Tyson’s claim.
