Emily in Paris has become synonymous with some eye-catching and eye-raising fashion looks. And, while Hollywood is known for keeping its talent comfortable on set, some things just have to be forsaken in the name of fashion. Yes, while it looked like Emily was living her best life bouncing around the cobblestoned streets of Paris in her stilettos, actress Lily Collins had a different take.
The age-old adage ‘beauty is pain’ was really ringing true for Collins during seasons one and two, as she recently confessed to suffering one major issue as a result of her character’s wardrobe choices.
During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, the actress revealed that the show’s fashion didn’t come without its sacrifice.
“I actually literally went to a podiatrist every week to fix my feet because I was wearing heels all the time,” she said. “I had to have, like, insoles made for every pair of shoes.”
Collins then went on to joke that while she’s open to seeing Emily travel to another major city, she’ll be stipulating that it needs to be one with flat streets or involve a complete wardrobe overhaul.
“Emily in Flats,” she jokingly titled the dream project, but honestly, it might have kind of a catchy ring to it.
While people absolutely love to hate on Emily’s sartorial choices, the show’s costume designer, Patricia Fields, has stuck her ground, defending the leading lady’s wardrobe on multiple occasions.
In a letter penned for InStyle, Fields explained that her wardrobe was designed to intentionally emphasise the fact that Collins iss playing a Midwesterner in a foreign country.
“Emily is an optimist and she would be very excited to be an American in Paris,” she wrote. “So to me, it just made sense that she would put on a blouse that had the Eiffel Tower on it or carry a Mona Lisa bag or throw on a beret,” Fields wrote.
Honestly, it does make sense, and as time went on, we almost grew to love Emily’s weird and wonderful clothing. While bordering on silly, you can’t deny that she injected a sense of infectious playfulness onto the chic streets of Paris, and ruffled a few feathers in the process. That’s what we call entertainment.
