In the ninth season finale, Dean bites the dust during the battle with Metatron only to be later revived as a demon. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ackles spoke about reading the twist of Dean coming back to life as a demon.

I remember reading that script and getting to the end and and was like no no and I’m reading like Crowley’s long soliloquy I’m like no no that’s no no Dean’s eyes open they’re black. I (throw) the script across the room.

Ackles made the above statement, sharing his shocked reaction to the twist, prompting him to toss the script away.

The twist Ackles referred to was a major cliffhanger for the series that switched up the status quo for the main characters. It also had major ramifications for Dean in the tenth season, which explains why Ackles was so surprised by his character’s sudden change of fate.

Ackles stated that reading the scripts in advance messed him up when he was ready to perform the scenes. As a result, The Boys actor did not like discovering the major twists in advance. Ackles stated:

I start thinking and making choices and things that with knowledge that I shouldn’t know and for me that kind of that can alter the performance.
