It did not seem like possibility of The Perfect Couple season 2 was in the cards when it released on Netflix. The show is listed as a limited series and is based on a very specific murder tale with a pretty hard ending. It’s also adapting a book that did not have a sequel, though author Elin Hilderbrand has written other novels.
But the show has performed so well that a season 2 could in fact take shape, and there’s some promising news based on new comments from showrunner Jenna Lamia, speaking to of all places, Town and Country.
“If all the elements came together and everybody was enthusiastic and the idea was inspiring enough to gather the same group of talented people together again, I think it’s something that’s possible. I would never say it’s impossible. There are definitely questions left at the end. The best shows—regardless if they’re going to do another season—leave you thinking after you’ve watched the final one.”
The book and show do not exactly end on a cliffhanger, but it seems like Lamia thinks there are enough threads there to continue. The entire situation is very reminiscent of another Nicole Kidman-starring murder mystery, Little Big Lies, which was originally supposed to be a miniseries until its popularity formed a second season. And maybe even a third down the road.
Speaking of Kidman, it may be due to her availability as to whether or not this could happen. There is practically no one busier than Kidman in Hollywood at the moment. She’s drawing some Oscar buzz for Babygirl, and she has eight upcoming projects in some stage of development or pre-release. Could The Perfect Couple season 2 slot in there? Well, she might make it a priority given that it’s the #1 show on Netflix and she could likely land a big payday to return.
That’s the other factor here, despite somewhat middling review scores, The Perfect Couple is doing extremely well on Netflix. The show is approaching two full weeks at #1 in Netflix’s top ten list, and in the last 48 hours has even held off the return of the second half of Emily in Paris’ latest season. Those are numbers that are absolutely making Netflix sit up and take notice.
So while this self-contained “miniseries” is based on one book and should be over, never count out the power of mass viewership. I would start getting optimistic about renewal.
