Kate’s assignment? Extended.
You don’t need to be a political buff IRL to appreciate an excellent political drama. The gossip, the scandals, the mind games, the extremely high stakes—what’s not to love? If you’re a fan of The West Wing, House of Cards, and Scandal, then you might be keeping tabs on Netflix’s gem of a show, The Diplomat. The critically-acclaimed show follows Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), a diplomat who is forced to take on international relations in the U.K. (not her specialty) after an international crisis. The posh job is less about peacekeeping and more about keeping up appearances, outmaneuvering opponents, and managing big personalities.
Season 2 picks up after a deadly explosion in the heart of London. Everything is a mess, tensions are high, and Kate is left to pick up the pieces. She also must come to terms with the fact the attack didn’t come from a rival nation but from within the British government itself… and she must deal with Madame Vice President (Allison Janey), who thinks Kate is after her job.

Honestly, two seasons just doesn’t seem to be enough. We want more, and Netflix agrees! Here is the status of The Diplomat season 3.
First of all, please confirm: Is The Diplomat coming back for season 3?
It sure is! Kate’s assignment is getting an extension. Before the second season even premiered, Netflix confirmed the show has been renewed for a third season. As of early October 2024, production in London and New York has already started.
What will season 3 of The Diplomat be about?
“Season 3 flips the chessboard,” according to Debora Cahn, the creator, showrunner, and executive producer. Debora told Tudum, “In season 3, Kate lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want.”
Obviously, Netflix is not trying to give away the whole plot, so don’t expect specifics until the trailer release, but this tidbit does tease that we’re in for a major twist that could potentially upend Kate Wyler’s life. Expect more drama, high stakes, and—of course—a lot of international politics.

When will The Diplomat season 3 premiere on Netflix?
It’s too early to tell. There has not been an official date announced for The Diplomat season 3, given they are so early into production. But if the show follows the pattern set by the first and second seasons, the third would come out in 2025. (Fingers crossed!)
