Elon Musk has once again captured attention with his latest claim about the upcoming Tesla Roadster. In a post on Saturday morning, Musk stated that the “new Tesla Roadster can fly,” sparking speculation and excitement among fans and skeptics alike. The Tesla CEO did not provide further details about the extent of the vehicle’s aerial capabilities, leaving many questions unanswered.
It remains unclear whether the Roadster will be able to take to the skies, how long it might be able to stay airborne, or when the highly-anticipated electric vehicle will actually become available to consumers. This is not the first time Musk has alluded to the possibility of the next-generation Roadster having flying abilities. In previous comments, he hinted at a collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX on the project, suggesting the incorporation of SpaceX technology.
However, most observers initially interpreted these remarks as referring to the Roadster’s expected incredible acceleration speeds rather than literal flight.
Musk hints at flight capability
When asked during a conversation on X (formerly Twitter) whether the Roadster could “fly a little,” Musk responded with the eyes emoji, further fueling speculation and excitement.
Musk is well-known for making bold and sometimes overly ambitious statements about future projects. He has previously shared concepts that did not come to fruition and regularly provided timelines that were delayed. Nevertheless, the idea of a collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX on the Roadster is intriguing, and the possibility of a flying car may not be entirely out of the question.
Based on Musk’s recent statements, the ability to fly has remained an essential aspect of the design for Tesla’s team working on the Roadster, alongside the many other anticipated features. In an interview in April, Musk suggested that the high-performance electric vehicle could be equipped with a modified steering yoke, among other enhancements. The excitement and speculation continue to build as the world eagerly awaits more information about the Tesla Roadster and its potential aerial capabilities.
Only time will tell whether Musk’s vision of a flying car will become a reality or remain a compelling concept.
