9 Behind-The-Scenes secrets about the looks From “Emily In Paris”

A specific prop seen at the beginning of the season is actually an important skincare tool that the makeup team used on each actor prior to makeup application.

1. Emily’s makeup looks have evolved over the seasons, just as her character’s storyline has.

Makeup supervisor Aurélie Payen said she used a lot of colored eyeshadows on Emily in Season 2, which was influenced by the makeup looks of Brigitte Bardot.

“Specifically for Emily I wanted a change [for this season]. Emily’s bold lips have always been her signature look. I wanted to keep that in mind and I wanted to give her a French cool attitude since she was more settled in Paris [this season],” Aurélie told BuzzFeed.

“For Season 3, I wanted her makeup to have more of a French influence — like more pinky cheekbones and lots of mascara. Maybe a balm instead of matte lipstick,” she said.

2. In addition to changing up her makeup, Emily also got a new hairstyle this season — which was influenced by fashion icon Jane Birkin.

“In Season 3, Emily is a little bit more mature. She’s a woman, she’s not a girl anymore. She has decisions to make that we see her work through in the first few episodes,” Aurélie said.

“Sometimes as a woman when you have things happening in your life, you want  change. For us, it was hair. So she has bangs in Season 3. It was a big change. We also wanted to give the [bangs] a French style, like of the French icons such as Jane Birkin.”

3. Keeping every actor’s skin hydrated and plump was key while filming.

“My goal was to keep the actors’ skin the best it can be. So meaning that on the first day of shooting, their skin was great, and on the last day of shooting their skin was even better. I always skin-prepped with the CurrentBody Skin LED Light Therapy Mask, which helps with acne, pigmentation, and it brightens the skin,” Aurélie said.

“From there, I love to use some sort of mist, like the Payot Gentle Toning Mist in the very beginning. Then I will mix my moisturizer and my serum together and apply them to the skin while it is still wet because it absorbs better. Then, I like to put an eyepatch on [each eye] and lip balm. With a roller, I love to massage the skin too. It brings blood to the skin and helps wake it up.”

4. The same LED mask Aurélie used on the actors for skin prep is actually seen in the first episode of Season 3.

“[Emily’s] at home and she has some problems to work through, some anxiety, she needs to think about what she has to do. Then she puts her face mask on and tries to relax. Because it’s a comedy-drama, we wanted to add something glamorous in a funny way. So she put on her big LED mask and it was very funny. I’m very happy because I was the one to bring that idea to set,” Aurélie said.

5. Aurélie applied makeup lightly on each actor for a specific reason.

Netflix

“I start my makeup looks with light foundation and light concealer. I want to show the skin, I want to see the skin. It’s very important for me as a makeup artist. Obviously, we are hiding a little bit of what we have to hide if needed,” she said.

6. Aurélie and her team pay close attention to the hairstyles, costumes, and makeup looks of each character to make sure all the looks are different from one another.

Netflix

“So we work to make something functional together because, for example, in one scene, I don’t want the characters to all have red lips. So one wears a red lip, whereas, for the other one, we will try to focus on the eyes,” she explained.

7. One of Aurélie’s favorite beauty looks from this season involves a bold lip and a strong eye look.

Netflix

“One of the beauty looks that I really loved is from Episode 2 or 3, she’s wearing a white and black outfit with wings and she has on a very dark, strong lip and winged eyeliner,” Aurélie said.

8. Shooting during a heat wave in France called for a lot of makeup touch-ups from Aurélie and her team.

Netflix

“I think we started [filming] in June because it was four months [in total]. We had this year of crazy weather in France during July and August. It was challenging to keep [the actors] hydrated and cool,” Aurélie said.

“We had to be very careful about the sweat [messing with their makeup]. So I loved to use the Payot mist on them [to refresh their skin before touching up their makeup].”

9. Often, one or two scenes would be shot across multiple days, and each character’s makeup had to look exactly the same.

Netflix

“For one or more scenes, Emily might be at the office, and then she’s on the street, and then she’s at the cafe, and then she’s in the apartment, but it’s [shot across] different periods of time,” Aurélie said.

“Maybe we will shoot on a Monday and then on a Friday of the following week and the character has to wear the same makeup. So the makeup has to be the exact same — the exact amount of foundation [has to be applied], the exact amount of lipstick on, the positioning of blush on the cheekbones, and everything like that,” Aurélie said.

Netflix

She added that they have to take a lot of photos of each and every makeup look to have continuity and keep everything consistent.
