1. Emily’s makeup looks have evolved over the seasons, just as her character’s storyline has.
Makeup supervisor Aurélie Payen said she used a lot of colored eyeshadows on Emily in Season 2, which was influenced by the makeup looks of Brigitte Bardot.

“For Season 3, I wanted her makeup to have more of a French influence — like more pinky cheekbones and lots of mascara. Maybe a balm instead of matte lipstick,” she said.

“In Season 3, Emily is a little bit more mature. She’s a woman, she’s not a girl anymore. She has decisions to make that we see her work through in the first few episodes,” Aurélie said.
“Sometimes as a woman when you have things happening in your life, you want change. For us, it was hair. So she has bangs in Season 3. It was a big change. We also wanted to give the [bangs] a French style, like of the French icons such as Jane Birkin.”

“My goal was to keep the actors’ skin the best it can be. So meaning that on the first day of shooting, their skin was great, and on the last day of shooting their skin was even better. I always skin-prepped with the CurrentBody Skin LED Light Therapy Mask, which helps with acne, pigmentation, and it brightens the skin,” Aurélie said.
“From there, I love to use some sort of mist, like the Payot Gentle Toning Mist in the very beginning. Then I will mix my moisturizer and my serum together and apply them to the skin while it is still wet because it absorbs better. Then, I like to put an eyepatch on [each eye] and lip balm. With a roller, I love to massage the skin too. It brings blood to the skin and helps wake it up.”

“[Emily’s] at home and she has some problems to work through, some anxiety, she needs to think about what she has to do. Then she puts her face mask on and tries to relax. Because it’s a comedy-drama, we wanted to add something glamorous in a funny way. So she put on her big LED mask and it was very funny. I’m very happy because I was the one to bring that idea to set,” Aurélie said.

“I start my makeup looks with light foundation and light concealer. I want to show the skin, I want to see the skin. It’s very important for me as a makeup artist. Obviously, we are hiding a little bit of what we have to hide if needed,” she said.

“So we work to make something functional together because, for example, in one scene, I don’t want the characters to all have red lips. So one wears a red lip, whereas, for the other one, we will try to focus on the eyes,” she explained.

“One of the beauty looks that I really loved is from Episode 2 or 3, she’s wearing a white and black outfit with wings and she has on a very dark, strong lip and winged eyeliner,” Aurélie said.

“I think we started [filming] in June because it was four months [in total]. We had this year of crazy weather in France during July and August. It was challenging to keep [the actors] hydrated and cool,” Aurélie said.
“We had to be very careful about the sweat [messing with their makeup]. So I loved to use the Payot mist on them [to refresh their skin before touching up their makeup].”

“For one or more scenes, Emily might be at the office, and then she’s on the street, and then she’s at the cafe, and then she’s in the apartment, but it’s [shot across] different periods of time,” Aurélie said.

She added that they have to take a lot of photos of each and every makeup look to have continuity and keep everything consistent.
