It’s the Netflix rom-com series that left fans yearning for more, so thankfully a second season of ‘Nobody Wants This’ is on the cards. This is everything we know so far.
A sex podcaster and a rabbi walk into a bar… No, it’s not the beginning of a bad joke but rather the premise of Netflix’s hit rom-com limited series, Nobody Wants This. For the uninitiated, the 10-part series, which debuted on the streaming service on September 26, served as a pertinent reminder for a generation of people why Adam Brody, who played the undeniably lovely Seth Cohen in The O.C., became the subject of our adolescent longings.
Nobody Wants This became Netflix’s third most-watched series or film in the UK in the days following its release, and for good reason too. To say Brody’s soft and sensitive character, rabbi Noah, was lacking in Rizz – Oxford University Press’ word of 2023 – was a colossal understatement. His chemistry, and kismet love story, with fiery Joanne (Kristen Bell) was a hark back to the rom-coms of the 2000s with all of its will-they-won’t-they false starts but blatant adoration.
Without spoiling the series, it ends on something of a cliffhanger, which has left fans who inhaled the series in its first weekend on the platform gasping for more. Will there be a season two? Will Joanne and Noah make it in the long-term? This is everything we know so far.
Has ‘Nobody Wants This’ been confirmed for season 2?
Yes, indeed it has. On October 10, Netflix’s chief content officer Bela Bajaria confirmed that Nobody Wants This had been renewed for a second season while speaking at the Bloomberg Screentime conference in Los Angeles.
‘Creating Nobody Wants This will forever be a career highlight for me,’ Foster shared in a statement to Netflix on October 10. ‘The incredible cast, crew, producers, and executives all made this into the show it is today, and to experience viewers’ reactions to this series now that it’s out in the world has been more than anything I could have dreamed.’
Along with the series’ creator, Erin Foster, the second outing of Nobody Wants This will also have Girls alums Jenni Konner and Bruce Eric Kaplan on its team, who are joining as showrunners and executive producers.
‘I’m so lucky to be able to continue this story,’ Foster continued, ‘and to do it alongside Jenni Konner and Bruce Eric Kaplan, who I’ve been such a fan of since Girls. … Justice for healthy relationships being the most romantic!’
Even before the inaugural series’ release, Foster seemed pretty hopeful about the chance of a second season. The story is a loosely autobiographical story about her own experience with meeting her real life partner, who’s Jewish.
Speaking to IndieWire prior to the September 26 Netflix premiere, Foster teased a sophomore season: ‘We’re getting a really positive response. And so I think the conversations have definitely started to happen about a potential season two. The story in season one unfolds really slowly. And so I think if there is a season two I would want to just kind of pick up where we leave off and continue to take it slow, because I don’t want us to get too far ahead of ourselves. I mean, I want my show to be on the air as long as possible.’
What will the plot of ‘Nobody Wants This’ season 2 be?
In an October 14 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Foster admitted that they’d already been working on the second season of the show for several weeks. ‘We’ve been in the writers room for about three weeks now,’ Foster said. ‘Kristen [Bell] came into the room with Justine [Lupe, who plays Morgan] to hear some storylines that we were working on. And she says she hasn’t gotten a reaction to anything like this, literally, since Frozen.’
Foster also made it clear where she intends to take the show for its second outing: ‘Joanne does not have to have the same journey that I had. But, I don’t think this is the kind of show to rob the audience of what they want to see. I think this is a show where you want to get what you want.’
Who would be in the cast of ‘Nobody Wants This’ season 2?
We can’t really expect Nobody Wants This to continue without Kristen Bell and Brody reprising their roles as Joanne and Noah, as the story would inevitably look at the fallout of Joanne’s decision not to convert to Judaism.
We’d also be hoping to see Succession‘s Justine Lupe return as Joanne’s sister Morgan and Timothy Simons as Noah’s brother Sasha. It also wouldn’t be Nobody Wants This without the families, so we’d also expect to see Stephanie Faracy, Sherry Cola, Jackie Tohn, Tovah Feldshuh, and Paul Ben-Victor reprise their roles, too.
When could we expect ‘Nobody Wants This’ season 2 to come out?
While it would be preemptive to state a release date before the second season has even entered production, the first season was filmed in and around Los Angeles, where Foster and her husband are based, in March 2024, and was then released six months later in September. With the good news that the series has been renewed for a second season then, we can expect to see Joanne and Noah back on our screens by next summer at the earliest. Watch this space!
