Queen Elizabeth II was surprised and wanted to know why the Duchess of Sussex chose to wear a certain accessory on her wedding day.
Meghan donned an off-the-shoulder gown designed by Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy. It came together in five months of collaboration between the duchess and the design team. The dress was estimated to cost about $265,000. It was made of double-bonded silk cady while the underskirt was made of triple silk organza. The silk-tulle veil was also a prominent feature of the dress as it required 3,900 hours to create.
Reactions to the dress were mixed. While some described it as “very elegant,” others said it was “too simple.” Meghan’s grandmother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth II, was split on a couple of things about it too and had some questions regarding the duchess’s choices.
Queen Elizabeth had a question about 1 accessory Meghan wore on her wedding day

Royal historian and author Robert Jobson revealed that the late monarch was confused about Meghan’s decision to wear a veil with the dress.
As The Sun noted, “The queen questioned why Meghan needed a veil for the wedding, given it was to be her second marriage.”
The Duchess of Sussex was previously married to Trevor Engleson before tying the knot with her second husband, Prince Harry, and there’s an old rule that brides are only supposed to wear a veil if it’s their first time getting married. Over the years though, some brides have decided to forgo that tradition and wear one after their first wedding. However, royals have stricter rules, which is likely why Queen Elizabeth was so taken aback by the fact that Meghan had a veil.
The queen wasn’t too keen on something else Meghan wore either
But that isn’t the only thing the second-time bride wore that stunned Queen Elizabeth.
In an excerpt from the book My Mother and I serialized by the Daily Mail, biographer Ingrid Seward shared that the late queen spoke to her cousin, Lady Elizabeth Anson, on the phone daily and told her that she did not think Meghan’s dress was appropriate.
According to that account, the late queen told Anson that the Givenchy gown was “too white” for a divorcee getting remarried in a church to look “quite so flamboyantly virginal.”
The information about the former monarch not being over the moon about the color of Meghan’s dress was also repeated by a Palace source who told The New Royals author Katie Nicholl that “The queen was surprised that Meghan wore pure white on her wedding day. Perhaps it’s a generational thing, but she believes if you’ve been married before you wear off-white on your wedding day, which is what the Duchess of Cornwall (Camilla Parker Bowles) did.”
