George Miller speaks about making another prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road.

Max and Furiosa

Director George Miller has announced plans for another prequel in the Mad Max franchise. This comes as Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga hits the theaters worldwide.

As Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga hits theaters, boasting rave reviews, Miller shared with USA Today that he has another prequel idea in development. This would be the fifth Mad Max film directed by Miller and is set to explore events before Mad Max: Fury Road.

“In terms of where we are going, there’s this account of Max in the year before we meet him in Fury Road, which we still have,” Miller revealed. “I don’t want to jinx it, but it’s the story we call ‘Max in the Wasteland,’ and it looks at what forges him as a character. If the planets align, I’d love to do it.”

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga delves into the backstory of the fierce warrior Furiosa. The narrative begins as the world collapses and Furiosa is taken from the Green Place of Many Mothers by the Warlord Dementus and his Biker Horde. As they traverse the Wasteland, they encounter the Citadel ruled by Immortan Joe. Amidst the battle for supremacy between the two tyrants, Furiosa must endure numerous trials to find her way back home.

Who Will Play Max In The Sequel?

The prospect of a new prequel raises questions about casting. Tom Hardy, who played Max nearly a decade ago in Fury Road, faced a notoriously challenging shoot. When asked about Hardy’s potential return, Miller indicated uncertainty, stating that it was too early to make any decisions about casting.

Hardy wasn’t the first to portray Max; Mel Gibson originated the role in 1979 and played it in two subsequent films. However, Miller has no plans to bring Gibson back, explaining that there isn’t a story that fits an older Max character.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Poised For Box Office Success

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga serves as both a reboot and a prequel to the iconic Mad Max franchise. Anya Taylor-Joy takes on the role of Furiosa, previously portrayed by Charlize Theron, bringing new energy to the one-armed desert vigilante character. The film made a significant impact at its world premiere in Cannes, garnering critical acclaim with an initial 85% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which has since climbed to 89% based on 269 reviews.

Furiosa is poised for a strong box office debut, with projections estimating a global opening between $80 million and $85 million. This includes a $40 million to $45 million haul from international markets and an additional $40 million-plus from the four-day domestic weekend. The film’s release marks another milestone for director George Miller, who continues to expand and enrich the Mad Max universe.
