Whether you liked it or not, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power became a hit series for Amazon, and it was expected that the series would be renewed for a second season, whose eight episodes will premiere later this year, as we have reported on multiple occasions. The upcoming season is already being talked about, as many fans are dissatisfied with the show and are claiming it will be bad, even though the premiere is in August, so it is unclear how they know that. But that is a completely different issue. What interests us here – and that is something we have reported on several times – is what novelties the season is going to bring.
In a recent interview, series showrunners Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne are teasing a very different second season, which will be dedicated to the villains. They are also teasing that not everyone will make it out alive, which has us quite excited and frightened at the same time.
In an interview for Total Film magazine, McKay and Payne discussed the upcoming season, as well as all the changes we are going to see, especially in terms of the characters and the overall tone of the season. “We like to say that Season 1 was primarily about our heroes. But Season 2 is all about the villains,” the showrunners said to kick off the interview. And this already seems to be very interesting, as we might, indeed, be looking at what promises to be a very exciting season. They continued:
“This time, Sauron’s agenda sets everything in motion: Adar [Sam Hazeldine, taking over the role from Joseph Mawle] and his army of orcs; Galadriel [Morfydd Clark], Elrond [Robert Aramayo] and Gil-galad [Benjamin Walker] and their armies of elves – all of which will come crashing together in the most ambitious battle our show has seen yet, a battle from which many big players may not make it out alive.”

The two of them also confirmed that the Elven smith Celebrimbor would become “the principal protagonist” of this season, which was something we’d expected, but also that his dynamic with Sauron becomes the “central relationship” of the series. This makes sense, knowing how important both of them are for the lore of The Lord of the Rings. They also revealed the following:
“A recurring motif in mythology centers around a king’s failing health leading to a sickness in the land that endangers the entire kingdom. Season 2 sees a fractured relationship between King Durin and his son take on a similar larger dimension.”

This certainly seems exciting, and we can assume, based on this and some earlier reports, that Season 2 of The Rings of Power will be even better and bigger than Season 1, so we’re looking forward to it. We are, of course, going to keep you updated, so be sure to keep following us for more info!
