With the Dallas Cowboys leading their season opener against the Browns, someone in the commentary box doesn’t seem so excited about the match. Making his debut as a regular season NFL broadcaster for Fox Sports, the seven-time Super Bowl champion wasn’t too keen on calling a certain plan that he didn’t like.
As called by veteran commentator Scott Hanson, Tom Brady wasn’t too pleased to see Brandon Aubrey’s 71-yard field goal attempt. Although that kick was called off due to the delay of the game, the Cowboys later on refused to take that attempt after timeout. But looking at Brady’s reaction, his debut off the field as a commentator might already be off to a shaky start after showing a lack of excitement.
What’s your reaction?
However, when asked about his preparations a few days back, Brady was visibly excited, “Obviously, super excited. There’s a little anxiousness, obviously. There’s been a lot of preparation that’s gone into it from a lot of people, and it’s been a couple-year journey.” In his rookie year as a commenter, Brady takes over from another legendary NFL commentator, Greg Olsen, in the Fox Sports seat.
It was back in 2022 when Brady put ink to his ten-year contract with Fox Sports worth $375 million. Kevin Burkhardt will be joining Brady on the commentary, thereby helping him learn through this exciting journey off the gridiron. Even Brady was appreciative of the support he would be receiving in this new chapter, “I’ve got the best partner with Kevin, Erin down on the field with Tom Rinaldi. We’ve got a great group, there’s so many talented people that I get to work with.”
Well, Brady needs all the support he can get as he transitions from calling plays on the field to calling out plays from the above. But looking back at his journey into the Fox Sports studio, it wasn’t seamless like we would have thought.Tom Brady’s road to NFL commentary box
It was Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch who first broke the news of legendary QB Brady joining the network’s announcement team. However, during that time, Brady was still contemplating whether he should continue his NFL career with the Buccaneers or “Brady the broadcaster” would ever happen. Speaking about Brady’s transition into the role of commenter, longtime broadcaster Boomer Esiason stated, “It’s going to take a while for all of us to get used to Tom Brady. It’s not going to happen overnight.”
Well, looking at Brady’s debut, commenter Esaison might be right, as the seven-time Super Bowl champion would need some time before getting used to calling out plays. Opening up about his thoughts about trying to cope with the pressure of joining the commentary box, ex-Buccaneers stated, “I want to get up every day and try to prove to them. Hey guys, I know I’m the rookie, but I’ve got your back too.” But judging from the commentary he gave, Brady needs to focus on getting better while putting more excitement into his voice.
However, it remains to be seen whether the legendary QB who breathed fire during his NFL career can do the same in a different role. Only time will tell whether the fans would like Brady in his new gimmick.
