The most shocking omissions include the Hot Girl, South African singer Tyla, and more.
The Recording Academy has spoken. Nominations for the 2025 Grammy Awards have been unveiled, but some of the year’s biggest music stars were noticeably left off the list.
The lack of recognition for some of the year’s most celebrated artists and releases raises familiar questions about whether the Grammy selection process truly reflects today’s music landscape or clings to outdated criteria. Once again, the list of nominees has sparked heated debate. These snubs highlight ongoing discussions within the music industry about the Grammys’ relevance and their ability to acknowledge both artistic merit and cultural impact. While there’s no clear rationale for these omissions, it’s an arbitrary reminder that not every deserving artist can secure a spot in each year’s nominations.

Megan Thee Stallion
Former L’OFFICIEL cover star Megan Thee Stallion released her self-titled third studio album Megan in June. Ahead of the album, she released three fiery singles: “Cobra,” “Boa,” and “Hiss,” which drew widespread acclaim and served as a breakout moment for her to address toxic people in her life especially after being shot. The music video for “Mamushi,” the fourth single from the album, went viral on TikTok following its release in August. Despite the album’s important conversations and commercial success, it was missing from both the major and the rap categories.
Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande may have gotten her fifth nomination in the Best Pop Vocal Album category this year, but she was shut out of the main categories for her album Eternal Sunshine. It was released in March, two months following the arrival of its lead single “Yes, And?,” which debuted at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. Her hit “we can’t be friends (wait for your love)” received zero nominations, despite debuting at the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100.
Jack Antonoff
Tyla
At the 2024 Grammy Awards, Tyla made quite the impression as she won the inaugural Best African Performance Award with her hit “Water.” The track captured audiences with its unique blend of Afrobeats, South African Amapiano, pop, and R&B, setting her apart. She kept the momentum with the release of her melodic and eponymous debut album in March, which received critical acclaim. Despite these achievements, Tyla didn’t receive recognition this year.
Dua Lipa
Dua Lipa has been a frontrunner for Grammy nominations ever since she won Best New Artist in 2019. Her 2020 album Future Nostalgia brought her another Grammy win and three additional nominations, including one for her collaboration with J Balvin and Bad Bunny on “Un Día.” Last year, her song for Barbie scored her two more nominations. But for the 2025 Grammys, Dua’s latest album, Radical Optimism, didn’t receive a single nomination, despite its hit single “Houdini.”
Lana Del Rey
Earlier in 2024, Lana Del Rey announced her latest studio album Lasso at Billboard’s pre-Grammys event. It’s her first project in the country genre and is expected to be released soon. “Tough,” its first single which features rapper Quavo, was released in July and was received positively. But the nominations were quiet about the New York-born artist, who has been nominated for 11 Grammys throughout her career and has yet to win.
