Ewan Mitchell’s character’s most dominating scene in the series so far actually stemmed from one of his weaknesses!
As Aemond Targaryen in the House of the Dragon series, Ewan Mitchell is acing his game much better than ever before. If anything, his portrayal of the character has become so immaculate over time that a lot of fans can’t help but commend how efficiently he has brought his respective character to life. But that doesn’t go without saying that Mitchell also differs from his character.

For instance, when it comes to pronouncing certain syllables in the High Valyrian language, the actor faces quite some difficulties. However, instead of seeing it as a setback, Mitchell made sure to perfectly use it to his advantage. In fact, he so immaculately turned this very weakness of his into delivering the strongest scene in the series — and it didn’t even feature any flying dragons!
Ewan Mitchell Perfectly Manipulated His Weakness For This HOTD Scene
In the latest released episode 4 of the House of the Dragon series, a lot of drama ensued and brought about one of Ewan Mitchell‘s strongest scenes as Aemond in the saga.
This came after Aemond, during the Council meeting, claimed that his brother Aegon was too “occupied” to have figured out his secret war plan with Criston Cole in the most meticulously planned manner to smoothly land the required effect: Dominating his brother by speaking in English during the meeting before switching to High Valyrian.

This wouldn’t have been the easiest of tasks for Mitchell, since he faces quite a bit of problem pronouncing the “r’s” in High Valyrian. However, with his quick thinking, the actor perfectly figured out the one way through which he could turn this very weakness of his into an incredibly strong moment for his character.
During a recent interview with USA Today to discuss this very episode, the 27-year-old actor candidly confessed the same, saying:
I have trouble rolling my “r’s” in High Valyrian. But that turned out interesting since Aemond doesn’t flower up this beautiful language. He uses the language more lethally.
Not only that, but Mitchell also proved that his character had the upper hand for now over Aegon through his exact switching of these two respective languages.

While using his weakness as a strength for his character was one thing, Mitchell further efficiently added a cherry on top through this very move. According to him, his switching between the languages — one of which only the two brothers understood — allowed his character’s older brother to “save face.”
As he himself continued to point out during the same interview:
The Council meeting is very much a public shaming, but switching to High Valyrian allows Aegon to save face, since only the two brothers understand it. It allows Aegon to recover.
That being said, this was indeed one of the more clever moves on the hands of Aegon, who also faced humiliation from this very brother of his in episode 3. But the one to credit for its true success is none other than mastermind Ewan Mitchell.
