Fans were delighted when Kate Middleton made a rare public appearance over the weekend, but one surprising detail has left some people confused.

The Princess of Wales joined her husband Prince William in a video message as they congratulated Team GB for their triumphs in the 2024 Paris Olympics. While fans were delighted to see Kate following her cancer diagnosis, some eagle-eyed viewers noticed she had changed up her rings.

Kate debuted a different ring alongside her engagement ring, leaving many to wonder what had happened to her wedding ring. Oncology pharmacist Dazhi Liu believes Kate’s decision to ditch her ring could be related to her cancer treatment.

Speaking to Hello Magazine, Dazhi said: “During cancer treatment, there are several practical reasons why someone might need to take off their rings. Chemotherapy can cause fluid retention in the hands, which might make rings tight and difficult.”

And that’s not the only thing that could be causing issues. The expert explained: “Metal rings could interfere with the radiation therapy and cause issues such as burns on the skin around the ring.”

Dazhi suggested Kate’s skin could also be more sensitive to irritation while she’s undergoing her treatment. Wearing her ring could aggravate these conditions.

Removing the ring could also protect Kate from infection, according to Dazhi. She explained: “Since patients are at high risk of getting infections during chemotherapy, removing rings can help prevent skin infections. Overall, taking off rings during cancer treatment can help avoid these potential problems.” While Kate didn’t wear her wedding ring, she did still have on her sapphire engagement ring.

When Kate and William appeared in their video for the Olympics, the Princess of Wales said: “From all of us watching at home, congratulations to Team GB.” William added: “Well done on all you’ve achieved.

“You’ve been an inspiration to us all.” The video then cut to former Team GB Olympic athletes such as Rebecca Adlington and Jessica Ennis who praised the British Olympic team.
