Based on the books by Julia Quinn, each season of Netflix’s popular period drama follows a different member of the titular family as they find love in London’s high society. With its second part released on June 13, the third season concluded the friends-to-lovers storyline between Colin and Penelope, and it was just recently announced that Benedict will be the lead character in Bridgerton season 4.

Netflix announced Benedict as the lead character in Bridgerton season 4 with a video that ends with actor Luke Thompson being fitted for a suit for a masquerade ball. In a subsequent post, Netflix shared the first Bridgerton season 4 story details: “Despite his elder and younger brothers both being happily married, Benedict is loath to settle down — until he meets a captivating Lady in Silver at his mother’s masquerade ball.” This all but confirms that Bridgerton season 4 will adapt Quinn’s book, An Offer from a Gentleman, and introduce Sophie Beckett as Benedict’s love interest.

In the Bridgerton book, Benedict meets Sophie Beckett, also known as the Lady in Silver, at his mother’s masquerade ball, and they go on to share a Cinderella-inspired love story. It was previously reported that Bridgerton season 4 is casting a major recurring role of “Emily,” a character who is an “East Asian female” between the ages of 24-30 and described as “plucky, endlessly resourceful, and having trouble trusting others.” The role will also involve nudity and sexual scenes, suggesting the character may be a love interest for one of the Bridgerton siblings.

It’s been speculated that, to prevent spoilers, “Emily” is actually a codename for Sophie Beckett since her character description aligns with many of Sophie’s traits from the book. The mention of an “East Asian” ethnicity would be a change, but would continue the show’s trend of incorporating interracial couples after Daphne and Simon Hastings, Anthony and Kate Sharma, and Francesca and John Stirling. With Benedict confirmed as Bridgerton season 4’s lead character, there is much to look forward to regarding his romance with Sophie, as indicated by the fan reactions.
