As Emily in Paris closed out the first half of its fourth season, Cami got some surprising and upsetting news from her doctor: She was never actually pregnant. Turns out, her medications may have contributed to the false-positive pregnancy test, while stress caused her to miss her period.
“My whole body felt different. I was so sure I was pregnant,” a distraught Cami told her friend, who asked how baby daddy Gabriel took the news. Cami admitted that she hadn’t told him yet because he’s been so excited and supportive, and the baby has kept them in each other’s lives.
When Cami later ran into Gabriel and his girlfriend Emily at his restaurant, Cami declined a glass of champagne (“Baby,” she simply said), opting not to share the truth just yet.
“I don’t think it was the right moment in a big room full of people,” showrunner Darren Star explains to TVLine. “I think she just got hit by the news, and was not expecting to find him there at that moment. And I think she’s pretty devastated by the news.”
Cami is also coming off a breakup with Sophia, who left for Greece after Cami refused to come with her. Sophia recognized that Cami didn’t want to move away from Gabriel — this was prior to the pregnancy twist — and Cami certainly looked forlorn when she spotted a sweet moment between Gabriel and Emily outside her window.
For Emily, Gabriel’s pregnant ex and her new lover shacking up in the same apartment building as her boyfriend has been incredibly messy.
That said, “I just think that Emily, at the end of the day, really loves and adores her friendship with Cami, and she clearly loves and adores Gabriel, as well,” star Lily Collins says. “She, at this point, really just wants the best for Cami and the baby… So her mind is just focused on that, and as long as Cami says it’s OK for her to be exploring things with Gabriel, that’s like the go-ahead for Emily.”
But of course, the reveal that Cami isn’t pregnant will shake things up when second half of the season drops on Thursday, Sept. 12. “You’ll see how that complication and that news does throw a wrench into the situation, because how could it not?” Collins teases. “But again, Emily cares for Cami and just wants to make sure that she’s OK.”
