The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’s reign in the top spot in Amazon’s top 10 is over now. Forbes reports the show has been ousted from the No. 1 slot by the new Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage movie Brothers.

The Rings of Power fell to the No. 2 spot on the overall Amazon original list, which also includes movies, this week after the show had been on top of the for most of the time since its October 3 Season 2 finale.

The new dark comedy/action movie Brothers, written by Etan Cohen(Holmes & Watson, Tropic Thunder) and Macon Blair(Palm Springs)and directed by Max Barbakow(Palm Springs)took over the No. 1 spot on Amazon’s original list.

The synopsis of the movie reads: “Brothers tells the story of a reformed criminal (Brolin) whose attempt at going straight is derailed when he reunites with his sanity-testing twin brother (Dinklage) on a cross-country road trip for the score of a lifetime. Dodging bullets, the law, and an overbearing mother along the way, they must heal their severed family bond before they end up killing each other.”

In addition to Brolin and Dinklage, Brothers also stars Glenn Close and Brendan Fraser.

Brothers Has Not Been Critically Well-Received

Amazon audiences seemingly are curious about Brothers despite its less-than-stellar Rotten Tomatoes scores. It currently has a “rotten” 38% critic score and a 48% audience score. Its IMDb rating sits at 5.4/10. The Rings of Power, on the other hand, has an 83% critic and a 49% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Rings of Power is the most expensive television series ever produced, and it has just completed its second season. Word has not been given as far as the future of the series and a third season. In an interview with Complex recently, the Rings of Power cast opened up about how the series has been received by fans given that it has taken liberties with J.R.R. Tolkien’s material.

Robert Aramayo, who plays Elrond in The Rings of Power, said of the fan reaction, “I get it. If you love the lore, you can allow the choices that we’ve made in the show to frustrate you if you want. I would just implore people to think that these are a set of choices that we’ve made based on the limited material that we have in the Second Age, and as any, this is what I think is great about Tolkien. It’s that if I make a point and say, ‘Elves are like this,’ then you can say, ‘Well, what about this story, and I can cite this, this,’ and that discourse can be fun.”

I get it. If you love the lore, you can allow the choices that we’ve made in the show to frustrate you if you want.

Sauron actor Charlie Vickers added about fan critique, saying that it “seems like people care about the show hugely. And I think, as a cast member, so much of the stuff is out of your control. We rock up as performers and we just do our job. And I can say that every performer, every crew member, has put in everything they can. And I think that you just have to be kind of like, ‘Well, I’ve given it my all, and we’ve done the best that we can,’ and let go of this weight of expectation and other peoples’ opinions.”

Amazon Boss Feels “Good” about Season 3 of The Rings of Power

Whether Amazon is moving forward with a Season 3 of The Rings of Power has yet to be confirmed. In October 2024, head of Amazon MGM Studios Jennifer Salke told Variety that she felt “really good’ about the show.

Salke added that over 55 million people have “engaged” with the show since the launch of Season 2 on August 29. “And if you look at the long-term trajectory, which is how this company looks at an asset like that, this is a long-term investment in that franchise…” Salke said. “There’s well over 150 million viewers watching and engaging with the show. So, I feel really good. I think we all do,” Salke added.

Seasons 1 and 2 of The Rings of Power are both streaming on Prime Video. Brothers is also streaming on Prime.
