The 26-year-old brother of Los Angeles Rams wideout Puka, 23, was on special teams duty for New Orleans as halftime approached on Sunday when a huge opportunity fell his way.

With the Saints down 13-10 against the Tennessee Titans, a 58-yard field goal attempt Brayden Narveson fell just short, landing in the hands of Samson below the uprights.

With the clock down to 0:00, Samson ran out of his own end zone and spotted a lane down the left-hand sideline.

The former BYU star sprinted down to the halfway line before cutting inside, avoiding tackles before finding more running room to the right.

Unfortunately for Samson, he was squeezed out of bounds at the three-yard line by Titans tight end Thomas Odukoya.

His Saints teammates began celebrating before realizing Samson had narrowly missed out on what would have been a 109-yard touchdown.

Samson’s remarkable if gut-wrenching play quickly spread on X, where fans were quick to comment.

“Stepped out on 3-yard line? No heart. Cut him,” one joked.

“We going to have to start calling Puka Samson’s brother now,” said a second.

“We’ve finally unearthed this year’s Puka Nacua,” added another.

As a fourth predicted, “He’s on the roster now.”

The Saints would go on to lose the game 30-27.

“100 percent I’m disappointed,” Samson said of the play after the game.

“Coach said too, ‘It’s the end of the half no matter what, get it in. Don’t get tackled with the ball.’

“And what did I do? I got freaking tackled with the ball and I let the guys down.”

Samson added that in hindsight he should have pitched it to his teammate who could have run it in for the score.

Reflecting on his time with the Saints, Samson said he felt he’d done “really good.”

“There’s still so much I’ve got to adjust to coming back into this league and playing with competitors at a high level like this,” he admitted.

“Guys are way more physical, way faster, plays are a lot harder to pick up, so it’s about just staying in this playbook and being ready.”

Samson will find out if he made the cut for the Saints’ initial 53-man roster by 4pm ET on August 28.
