An Ape with Its Mouth Open in Kingdom of the Planet of the ApesKingdom of the Planet of the Apes comes short of a major global box office milestone as its theatrical run draws to a close. Picking up centuries after where 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes left off, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was met with mostly positive reviews upon its release in May. After spending over a month in the theaters, the film’s theatrical run is coming to an end as its official VOD release date is set for tomorrow, July 9.

As per ColliderKingdom of the Planet of the Apes‘ overall box office haul misses a major global milestone. At the time of writing, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has amassed $391 million at the worldwide box office. With its impending VOD release marking the end of its theatrical run, the movie will miss the coveted $400 million milestone at the box office, falling just under this total.

How Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Stacks Up Against The Overall 2024 Box Office

Despite missing the $400 million mark, the box office story for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is far from dismal. The film actually beat its well-reviewed predecessor, War for the Planet of the Apes, at the domestic box office, taking home $169.6 million compared to War‘s $146.8 million. This made Kingdom the third-highest domestic box office release for the modern Apes franchise. This feat was especially notable given the high acclaim for War for the Planet of the Apes, which put pressure on the new installment to perform.

With a global box office haul of just under $400 million, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes likely profited off of its $160 million budget, though it did not do so as handily as it may have hoped. As it stands, the movie’s $391 million total keeps it in the no. 5 slot among all films at the worldwide box office for 2024. Domestically, it is slightly lower, as it currently sits in the no. 6 slot.

At the time of writing, the highest-grossing movie of 2024 so far is Inside Out 2, with a $1.216 billion box office total.

Looking at the current and upcoming release calendar, it seems that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be edged out of its top 5 slot in no time. As it stands, it is only around $30 million above Bad Boys: Ride or Die, which is still in theaters and may very well overtake the primate-centric feature. Despicable Me 4, which was released on July 3, had a $75 million opening and is well-positioned for its run. Films like these will likely usurp Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes as it ends its theatrical run.
