Nicola Coughlan has been immortalised forever as the “wee lesbian” of Derry Girls with a fantastic mural outside a Dublin gay bar.
The acclaimed actor now starring in Netflix’s Bridgerton is a beloved LGBT+ ally known for her searing transphobe takedowns and general all-round loveliness.
She’s celebrated nowhere so much as her home country of Ireland, where the queer community have honoured her with an incredible Pride tribute.
It was created by talented artist Emmalene Blake, who depicted the iconic moment Coughlan’s Clare Devlin comes out as the “wee lesbian” of Derry Girls.
“Happy Pride to all the wee lesbians and other LGBTQ+ folk! Hope everyone is having a great weekend,” Blake wrote as they unveiled the project on Instagram. “Painted a quick Clare from Derry Girls, the best show ever, on the side of The George.
“Really hoping season three is out soon coz we could all do with more Derry Girls in our lives right now.”
Nicola Coughlan shared her appreciation in a comment beneath the post. “I love it so much, what an honour,” she wrote. She also shared it with her 280,000-strong Twitter following, writing “How cool is this?!!”
It’s not Blake’s first Derry Girls mural – in 2019, a piece depicting the brilliant Sister Michael rolling her eyes appeared on a wall close to a recently-closed pub, which was being torn down to make room for a hotel.
Blake painted the popular character raising her eyes to the heavens with a speech bubble reading: “Another hotel? Christ.”
You can check out more of Blake’s work on Instagram here. Also deserving of a special shout out is this incredible tribute to our favourite She-Ra gal pal, Catra.
