The first two seasons of the Netflix show, Black Summer, were added to the streaming service in 2019 and 2021, respectively, but it was cancelled in 2023

A Netflix horror show, axed a year and a half ago, continues to haunt fans with its undead allure. Although Black Summer was cancelled in 2023 without much initial uproar, the series, which premiered in 2019 and boasts an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – out-scaring even The Walking Dead for some – has been resuscitated by a dedicated fan base on social media.

Forlorn followers hope for a third season revival as they reel from the show’s abrupt end. Critics compare it favorably to a Cillian Murphy film that scored 100% on the same site.

While questions linger like zombies in limbo without a third season, admirers continue their outcry on X. “I don’t think there will ever be a better 1st season than Black Summer on @netflix. Fear the walking dead also had a terrific first season but something different about Black Summer,” tweeted one fan in November.

“Hey, @netflix. I won’t forgive you for cancelling Black Summer. It’s one of the best zombie series out there #bringitback,” exclaimed another in October. “Rewatching the Masterpiece series Black Summer on Netflix and remembering they cancelled it while Walking Dead got 86 different spins offs nobody is watching…” lamented yet another in November.

“I will NEVER forgive Netflix for canceling Black Summer,” echoed another disappointed viewer in October, reports the Irish Star.

“Netflix cancelled Black Summer smfh I was hoping for a third season. Idk why I pay for this s*** anymore lol,” another disgruntled fan vented on social media. One user even quoted a post that included Black Summer in a list of “14 cancelled Netflix shows that every wants back” and passionately stated, “Black Summer needs to be added to this list because they ended that second season on a cliffhanger and I’ve never forgiven them for it.”

Back in April 2019, famed horror writer Stephen King was ahead of the curve, as he lauded the show on social media shortly after its release.

“BLACK SUMMER (Netflix): Just when you think there’s no more scare left in zombies, THIS comes along. Existential hell in the suburbs, stripped to the bone,” he posted. “BLACK SUMMER: No long, fraught discussions. No endless flashbacks, because there’s no back story. No grouchy teens. Dialogue is spare. Much shot with a single handheld camera, very fluid. Showrunners could learn a lot from this. If they could work, that is,” he further elaborated on his profile the following day.

At the time, some viewers believed that the show was what the Walking Dead could have been. “Black Summer so far is what Walking Dead should be,” one user commented
