Warning: Spoilers ahead for Agatha All Along episodes 1 & 2
Wanda’s spell over the residents of Westview was already twisted, but Marvel’s latest Disney+ series, Agatha All Along, made it even worse. In WandaVision, Wanda Maximoff puts a hex on the town of Westview, keeping the residents trapped in her romantic sitcom paradise. While Wanda is living her dream life with Vision and their kids, her neighbors are stuck in a nightmare where they have to play along with whatever reality Wanda conjures up. Wanda eventually does the right thing by setting them free, but the damage had already been done.
Agatha All Along is the follow-up series to WandaVision, and it picks up three years after the events of its predecessor. Agatha finally snaps out of the spell the Scarlet Witch put her under, and audiences get to see how Wanda’s spell still lingers over Westview’s residents. However, this reveal makes Wanda’s spell even worse, as she didn’t need to place the residents under a spell for her to live in a friendly community.
Agatha All Along Proves Wanda’s Spell Wasn’t Necessary For Her To Build A Community
The first episode of Agatha All Along is a parody of dramatic, HBO-quality police dramas, in the spirit of Mare of Easttown or True Detective. The episode ends with Agatha crawling out of Wanda’s spell, realizing this detective story was all in her head. It’s revealed that Agatha has been trapped under Wanda’s influence for three years, and the residents of Westview have been playing along with her visions and assisting her in any way they can, like bringing her groceries.
The residents of Westview turned out to be great people who accepted Agatha, even after her fight with Wanda and her many illusions afterward. They embrace their community and accept outsiders even after they’ve done wrong. Their hospitality proves that Wanda didn’t need to put Westview’s residents under her spell as they likely would have welcomed her into the community regardless of her mystical abilities. It makes Wanda look even worse for what she did to them and lessens the sympathy audiences should have had for her in WandaVision.
Westview Residents Are Still Traumatized By Wanda’s Spell 3 Years Later
In Agatha All Along, the Westview community is still reeling from Wanda’s spell three years later. The residents refuse to say her name and the ruins of her home remain untouched, with some graffiti that says “Evil witch.” During Agatha’s conversation with Sharon Davis, she has to correct Agatha after she calls her Ms. Hart, which was her name under Wanda’s spell. Westview’s civilians are still traumatized from Wandavision‘s events, and it’s a clever way of tying the two shows together.
Wanda’s actions are even more harmful than what was shown in WandaVision as they had lingering consequences. Westview’s residents’ shared trauma shows how devastating her spell’s effects were, and it’s hard to see Wanda as a hero anymore in her show. If Wanda does return in Agatha All Along or elsewhere in the MCU, she owes the people of Westview more than an apology for what she did so they can find some closure.
