Aemond’s fire-spitting monstrous creature has a much vaster history than anyone could imagine.
House of the Dragon is finally back to its traditional action-packed plot twists reintroducing its characters’ gigantic pets in what they’re best at — ruthless fights.
The second season’s episode 4 titled The Red Dragon and the Gold brought the first massive attack proving that no other dragon had high chances to compete with Aemond’s Vhagar.
The gigantic creature didn’t have any trouble while knocking down two other major game players, taking Rhaenys’ life and causing a lot of problems for Aegon and his future as the King.
Coming as some kind of “you go girl” manifest since she’s one of few female dragons, Vhagar is indeed the Greens’ most certain trump card in the upcoming war, and her history makes everything quite clear about her key role in the whole mess between the Greens and the Blacks.
Introduced in House of the Dragon’s season 1, Vhagar doesn’t get too much attention in regard to her vast life story before she was claimed by Aemond, but George R.R. Martin is pretty specific about it in Fire & Blood.
By the time House of the Dragon picks the whole story up, Vhagar is around 180 years old, which makes her the oldest dragon having much bigger experience in major fights than all other fire-spitting creatures combined.
Additionally, Vhagar does have a privilege as a dragon that saw Aegon’s Conquest alongside Westeros’ most prominent dragonriders. After being hatched in Dragonstone, she was claimed by Aegon the Conqueror’s sister-wife Visenya that eventually brought her family some major victories securing several influential lords’ loyalty to House Targaryen.
In House of the Dragon’s storyline, Vhagar is initially introduced as a dragon claimed by Laena Velaryon, but their union doesn’t last long, and soon after Laena’s death Vhagar accepts Aemond as her dragonrider.
At that point, everyone most likely had no clue about Vhagar’s potential key role in the war, but now that the feud between the Blacks and the Greens reached a point of no return, her taking Aemond’s side is surely a major victory for the Greens even prior to all the fights that Vhagar may win in the future.
Considering how long the dragon has been around the Targaryens and how used she got to embarking on fierce battles, Vhagar is indeed a fire-spitting creature that has no real trouble when it comes to bringing her team yet another victory.
As the oldest, the largest and surely the most dangerous dragon that ever lived in Westeros, Vhagar is the Greens’ pride and joy, but, as the original book claims, her unique skills can’t guarantee the Iron Throne for the Greens after all.
