A wild variety of genres come together to prove there’s still great cinema around: comedies, dramas, horrors, action, and whatnot.
Note: This is not a ranking but rather a collection of 2024’s best movies so far.
10. Civil War — War Action
If you’ve ever wondered what may happen to our country if the divide worsens,
Alex Garland ’s got you covered. Civil War revolves around exactly what you’ve already deduced from the title, following a group of army journalists on their journey across dystopian America as they try to reach the White House before the rebels.
9. Immaculate — Horror
For those of you starving for either good ol’ horrors or more Sydney Sweeney content, Michael Mohan released Immaculate. This movie is a story of a devout woman of faith who settles down in a seemingly peaceful new convent… Only to soon discover that its dark secrets leave no place for the faithful in a square mile.
8. Kinds of Kindness — Dramedy
Yorgos Lanthimos went all out in Kinds of Kindness, making the ultimate mix of comedy and drama that’ll have you rethinking your own life as its three main characters do with theirs. Breaking free from the grasp of fate, seeing your loved ones slip away, or struggling with fanatical faith — it’s a 3-for-1, and it’s brilliant.
7. The People’s Joker — Social Comedy
At this point, you might be thinking: come on, just how many more Joker adaptations can they make before they realize they’ve run out of fuel a decade ago? Usually, we’d agree, but not in this case. Vera Drew’s The People’s Joker switches the roles, presenting the infamous villain as the hero, and the Caped Crusader as the villain.
6. Monkey Man — Crime Thriller
You know it’s going to be something special when it has Dev Patel written all over it, and Monkey Man proves it once again. You may think there’s little else to tell about rebellions and tyranny, but this movie following a young man who leads a personal and bloody vendetta against his community ’s ruthless leaders will prove otherwise.
5. Love Lies Bleeding — (Gory) Crime Romance
For those confused by the weird genre description, here’s the deal: Rose Glass’s Love Lies Bleeding appears to be a brutal criminal action story with unhinged Tarantino-ish scenes and too much grime. But beneath all that, it’s a sweet romance story of two strangers who are each struggling with their demons and want love.
4. The Idea of You — Romantic Comedy
If all the blood and sweat and dirt of the previous entry just isn’t for you, look no further than Michael Showalter’s The Idea of You. The movie sees an unlikely couple’s love bloom: a single 40-year-old mother and a young boy band lead singer have a unique chemistry — but of course, their situation comes with… Difficulties.
3. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga — Sci-Fi Action
No one who watched Fury Road could have possibly forgotten the rebellious warrior Furiosa — and that’s why she got her own movie. George Miller’s epic prequel to the previous Mad Max film, Furiosa has everything we loved its predecessor for and more, wrapped into the same action-packed bloody dystopian present paper.
2. The Fall Guy — Action Dramedy
David Leitch pulled the UNO reverse card on the audience and made a movie about moviemaking that’s really not about that. The Fall Guy follows a fallen from grace (literally) stuntman who’s wasting his life on his quest to help his ex complete her dream movie, discover the truth about his terrible trauma, and believe in love again.
1. Dune: Part Two — Sci-Fi Drama
The one movie that needs no introduction, Denis Villeneuve’s sequel to Dune has been long anticipated and turned out to be this year’s main sensation by far. Dune: Part Two reunites us with Paul Atreides as he intends to use whatever power he can muster to crush his family’s murderers and re-establish his dynasty on the brutal world of Arrakis.
