Grammy-award-winning rapper Megan Thee Stallion has revealed plans to make her own anime series. While there isn’t much information about the ins and outs of the project, the Texas-born artist has been vocal about her love for anime both in and outside the booth and has been developing a reputation for herself in the anime community, recently serving as a presenter at the 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards held in March.
With this project, Megan Thee Stallion will join the ranks of US-based musical artists who have either produced their own or been part of the production of an anime series, a list that includes Denzel Curry, Flying Lotus, Jaden Smith, Madison McFerrin, and more.
What Does Megan Thee Stallion Have to Do With Anime?
The Rapper’s Love For the Medium Goes Way Back
A lot of people have had very visceral reactions to seeing Megan Thee Stallion’s expression of her anime fandom, and her participation in the Crunchyroll Awards earlier this year was rather divisive, with many accusing her of jumping on the explosion of the popularity of anime in the 2020s; however, throughout her career and even prior to her entry to the stardom she now enjoys, Megan has been an avid watcher of anime, referencing titles like My Hero Academia, Sailor Moon, Naruto, Hunter x Hunter and Jujutsu Kaisen in her music. On the song “Otaku Hot Girl”, taken off her 2024 self-titled album, the English voice actor Yuji Itadori can be heard reprising the character’s famous line about liking “tall girls with big butts”). A lot of the visuals in the music video for the song “Neva Play” are anime inspired, with various moments depicting the rapper and her collaborator, RM of BTS, while the song “BOA” is named after One Piece character Boa Hancock while also falling in line with the serpentine theme presented in the nomenclature and music video visuals of her hit song, “HISS”
Shoutout to my friends @Crunchyroll for bringing Todoroki Tina to life 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 pic.twitter.com/BWyDcqlOFh — TINA SNOW (@theestallion) December 21, 2019
Few Megan fans can forget her “Todoroki Tina” era, which combines her Pimp C-inspired “Tina Snow” persona with her love for My Hero Academia character Shoto Todoroki. In addition to frequent anime references in her music, Megan has done many cosplays from various series, like Jolyne Kujo from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, while her dress for the Crunchyroll Awards was inspired by the design of Bruno Bucchiarati. She revealed her plans to eventually produce her own anime series on Stationhead, but we won’t be seeing it any time soon as she has been focused on her music. There are various ways that a Megan Thee Stallion anime could go, with many fans begging for some kind of magical girl series, but only time will tell.
