Here’s what we can expect as the Game of Thrones prequel continues.
Can’t get enough of all of the drama and dragons? As House of the Dragon season 2 heats up, a lot of fans are wondering when they’ll get their next fix—and just how long the fantasy series will go on for.
The Game of Thrones prequel follows the Targaryen family about two centuries before the events that saw Bran take the Iron Throne (no, we still can’t get over that ending). While Game of Thrones lasted for six epic seasons, we don’t know exactly how many more seasons of House of the Dragon to expect—but we do have a few theories.
Warning: House of the Dragon spoilers ahead.
What is House of the Dragon about?
In House of the Dragon, we follow the fight for power between Rhaenyra Targaryen’s blacks and Alicent Hightower’s greens—the show is based on the events detailed in George R. R. Martin’s book Fire and Blood. The book traces the reign of Viserys and the Dance of the Dragons. This battle for power between the blacks and the greens ultimately sees all of the dragons killed and Aegon III, the son of Rhaenyra and Daemon, taking the throne. In the book, Aegon III is succeeded by his son Aegon IV and things wrap up there. (It’s pretty complicated. There are a lot of Aegons. Please find our comprehensive Targaryen family tree here for reference.)In other words, the main action of the book is the mighty battle between Rhaenyra and Alicent—this is the battle that is currently playing out in season two of the show. This means that we could reach the end of Fire and Blood by the end of this season, or possibly by the end of next season of House of the Dragon.
However, that doesn’t mean that the show will have to end. Luckily for GOT and HOTD fans, George R. R. Martin has provided plenty of material. Although there is no main novel that traces the events in between Fire and Blood and Game of Thrones, there is a series of novellas set about 90 years before GOT that could offer some source material. Plus, we wouldn’t put it past HBO to create some new storylines about Rhaenyra and Alicent’s descendants. In fact, the prequel could hypothetically take us all the way up to the start of the GOT timeline—but this may be unlikely.
The Hightowers are totally shady and totally compelling.
Of course, the Game of Thrones TV series famously took on its own storyline after it concluded before George R.R. Martin had released the final book in The Song Of Ice and Fire series, The Winds of Winter, which is still yet to be published. So it’s not beyond imagination that the show may continue without source material.
How many seasons of House of the Dragon will there be?
We still don’t know for sure, but the show was renewed for a third season earlier this year. According to Deadline, the show is expected to run for three or four seasons.
