The Ones Who Live is a limited spinoff of The Walking Dead, focusing on Rick and Michonne.
Movie and TV makeup artist Ande Yung, has worked on many impressive titles in the makeup department, including Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist, Girls5eva, and Elsbeth, a new series on Paramount+. She is just as comfortable doing beauty makeup as handling the bloody stuff, which came in handy for her position in The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live.
The spinoff focuses on the reunion of Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) and their take down of the CRM (Civic Republic Military). The series marked Lincoln and Gurira’s return to The Walking Dead universe after the actors departed the series in seasons 9 and 10, respectively.
Yung was the Makeup Department Head for The Walking Dead spinoff and shared several outstanding videos of her techniques on social media. She was also considerate enough to reveal many of her favorite products for other artists to consider in their craft.
In an interview with Backstage, Yung shared she was excited to take on a Walking Dead series but felt pressure to ensure that Rick’s scars were accurate. She also consulted with previous Walking Dead makeup department heads from previous seasons. As a newcomer to TWDU, she felt welcomed into the family, allowing her to focus on the job.
She doesn’t call herself a special effects makeup artist but feels a department head or union make up artist should have an understanding of how to apply cuts and prosthetics.
If you have any interest in this field be sure to read Backstage’s entire interview with Ande Yung as she gives lots of insight into the industry.
Below are several of Yung’s favorite Rick Grimes images which feature her amazing work.
The images below showcase Yung’s work on Rick and Okafor (Craig Tate) in a cut scene from the first episode of The Ones Who Live. This was after Rick cut off his hand and landed in the hospital.
The Ones Who Live seemed to tie up Rick and Michonne’s story, including a reunion with their children, Judith (Cailey Fleming) and RJ (Antony Azor), but there have been no announcements if they will or won’t be seen again in another spinoff. Fans are hopeful that there will be more of their story told in a future series.
