The following contains spoilers for Outer Banks Season 4, Part 2, now streaming on Netflix.
One of the biggest Netflix shows of the 2020s has been Outer Banks. It details the adventures of the Pogues down in South Carolina: friends who love treasure-hunting together. However, Season 4 has been even more dangerous, bringing a lot of trouble to their doorsteps as they chase Blackbeard’s treasure: the Blue Crown.
Shockingly, Outer Banks Season 4, Part 2 kicked off with a major technical issue. It’s one that did hurt the Netflix brand a bit. While it was sorted, it still left fans feeling frustrated and confused.
Outer Banks Season 4, Part 2 Was Missing Audio
Outer Banks’ Main Episodes Left Fans Feeling Upset
Outer Banks Season 4, Episode 8 had no audio for some fans. Others suffered a lack of sound just after the Netflix logo and its iconic “Tudum” sound that begins its shows and movies. There was also lagging audio for those who did have sound. Some fans reported that Episodes 9 and 10 also had no audio or that audio didn’t sync up with the scenes.
These technical difficulties went on for over 24 hours, causing many fans to complain online. Netflix replied, “We are aware about this issue on Outer Banks. Thanks for reporting this issue to us! We’re currently working on this to resolve this as quickly as possible!” Still, that apology didn’t calm fans down regarding the inconvenience. The apology did state there was not a specific timeframe to fix the glitch.
It was a global issue the company was trying to expedite and resolve in a timely manner. It’s worth noting that the press didn’t have any issues with its screeners or the immediate episodes that debuted. As of this writing, the issue has been patched, with fans noting it’s all back to normal. Netflix didn’t reveal the cause, however.
How Did the Outer Banks Audio Hurt Season 4?
Outer Banks’ Audio Issues Affected Key Story Beats and Plot Twists
Episode 8 is a crucial episode. It deals with JJ telling Kiara about Chandler Groff being his father, JJ being betrayed by Groff over the treasure, and John B and Sarah Cameron trying to get married. Episode 9 dealt with the Pogues trying to race to the treasure in Morocco ahead of Groff and the evil Corsair pirates. Without functioning audio, audience members miss out on important pieces of information that not only inform why certain events are taking place, but also contextualize the ones that follow.
Episode 10, for example, addressed Sarah’s pregnancy, as well as JJ being killed after Groff stole the crown. These are all integral episodes to have audio cut. They’re not just the final episodes of the season — there are major twists and turns that change the entire complexion of the series and where Outer Banks Season 5 will end to close the series. Ultimately, it’s an error that Netflix wishes hadn’t occurred due to the gravity and stakes in play at the time.
