In an expansive cover story, Megan Thee Stallion provides insight into her dynamic life as she juggles producing hit tracks, navigating her career as an independent artist, and actively supporting other female artists, including her admiration for Kamala Harris, who could potentially become the first female President of the United States.
When reflecting on her journey as an independent artist, the 29-year-old rapper candidly shared her experiences. “Being independent is hard,” she admitted. “When you have a label doing everything for you, all you need to do is wake up and be the celebrity. That’s a very easy life. I have to do s-t other people aren’t doing. I do work as my own label. I do fund a lot of my own things. There’s a lot of things I’m still learning as I go. The s-t is not just handed to me in my lap – I really got to go figure out.” She went on to tell Billboard, “It’s tough, but I like figuring it out. I like doing things on my own. I like working. I’m not going to stop. The more I know, the better I’ll get.”
Despite the challenges of independence, Megan Thee Stallion has achieved considerable success and made a significant impact on the rap industry. Billboard even pointed out how often Black men are seen rapping her lyrics at shows, which she finds incredibly rewarding. “We actually are going the hardest right now. The women are killing it right now. We are the hardest MCs right now. We going harder than the boys, for sure.” Speaking of other female MCs, the conversation shifted to her relationship with fellow rapper Nicki Minaj, and whether there might be a chance for reconciliation or collaboration in the future despite their past conflicts. Megan responded honestly, “I still don’t know what the problem is. I’m not even sure what we would reconcile because I’m still unaware of the issue.”
On a more uplifting note, Megan expressed her support for another powerful figure, Kamala Harris, emphasizing the significance of having a strong female presence in leadership. “To be alive in a time when a Black woman–or any woman–could become president is a blessing,” she remarked. “This is what the future is about. We are on the brink of having a strong Black female leader in that position. I believe America needs a woman to bring a different perspective. Things have been a bit chaotic lately, and we need someone who can take charge. I have faith that Kamala will do just that.”
