Meghan Markle quickly understood that marrying Prince Harry meant she would always be ‘second best’, according to a royal expert.

Royal author Tom Quinn has claimed the former Suits star was taken aback when she found out she wouldn’t be living in Windsor Castle upon her arrival in Britain. The Duchess of Sussex tied the knot with Harry in 2018 and they were later given the 10-bedroom Frogmore Cottage as their residence.

In 2020, the couple decided to leave the Royal Family and relocate to California. They now live in Montecito with their son and young daughter, Princess Lilibet. Quinn has suggested that jealousy towards Prince William and Kate Middleton played a part in their decision to leave the UK.

He told The Mirror: “Harry has always been jealous that the accident of birth has made his brother certain of his role in life while, as spare, he was left to struggle to make his own way. Of course he was still a senior royal, still in the line of succession, which was magical for Meghan.

“But following their wedding the Duchess of Sussex quickly realized that by marrying the spare she was always going to be tied to second place.” He added: “When Meghan arrived in the UK and got over the first shock of not being allowed to live in Windsor Castle, she realized that no amount of hard work and charm would move her into pole position.

“Meghan and Harry were and are jealous of the status of William and Kate.” Royal biographer Ingrid Seward agreed. She believes Meghan had a vision of royal life that simply didn’t pan out, feeling early on that she was engaged in a futile effort.

Speaking to The Telegraph, she revealed: “I think that Meghan must have been incredibly envious and then jealous of Kate. I heard Meghan actually thought she was going to be a princess and live in Windsor Castle.

“Instead, there’s William and Kate with this beautiful house, while they are stuck in Nottingham Cottage.” Stewart also ruled out the possibility of a reconciliation between the two Royal brothers and their wives, with Meghan reportedly discontented with William and Kate’s higher status in the Royal hierarchy.

An insider previously revealed to The Telegraph that Meghan believed she had more authority to voice her opinions than Kate, given her established career prior to joining the Royal Family.
