Snow White’s remake trailer reaches an unfortunate milestone after revealing its first images

Rachel Zegler Snow White

Disney revealed the first look at the trailer for Snow White at D23 on August 9, 2024. Snow White is a remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the very first animated film by the Walt Disney Company, and will star Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) as the titular princess, with Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) stepping into the role of the Evil Queen. The film was originally set for release in March 2024 but was delayed by a whole year and will now open in theaters in March 2025.

While it has been over three weeks since the trailer dropped, Snow White‘s trailer has now received over 1 million dislikes on YouTube, according to CBR. It does have 82,000 likes, which is worth mentioning, but despite the 1 million dislikes not being visible to the public, they can be viewed through browser extensions. 8.4 million viewers have viewed the trailer since it was uploaded following D23.

Is There More To These Down Votes Than Meets The Eye?

Snow White has been riddled with controversy since it was announced, some legitimate and others not. Actor Peter Dinklage criticized the decision to remake the film as it fell on the old stereotype of using dwarfs as magical creatures. Disney’s attempts to head off any controversy by saying the characters would be reimagined as new magical creatures, only to feature CGI dwarf characters, has been highly criticized. Many have pointed out that they took away roles of actors with dwarfism, a group of actors who already have a limited amount of work in Hollywood. Meanwhile, the visual effects for the movie have been highly criticized, with the dwarfs, all based on their 1937 counterparts, having an uncanny valley quality about them.

However, it is important not to ignore that another part of the hate for Snow White comes from a campaign against the movie. Some have accused the movie of “being woke” for casting Rachel Zegler as Snow White, and this led to many out of context stories being spread online about the actress. While some people are likely to dislike Snow White for fair reasons, others will only dislike it because they have a vendetta against the star, which can be seen in the trailer’s comment section.

The amount of dislikes the trailer has also might not be entirely reflective of the real world. The system can easily be manipulated by review bombers, as seen with The Acolyte, which, like Snow White, had a hate campaign against it before anyone saw a frame of footage. Disney’s remake of The Little Mermaid also had its trailer hit with racist comments and over 1 million dislikes, but that didn’t stop the movie landing a $117.5 million Memorial Day opening. The film also became the sixth highest-grossing movie of 2023 at the domestic box office.

Snow White opens in theaters on March 21, 2025.
