Warning! SPOILERS about Emily in Paris season 4 ahead.
Camille went through many ups and downs in Emily in Paris season 4, but her choice not to reveal the truth risks rehashing a kind of story tackled plenty by the comedy series. Emily in Paris season 1 introduced Camille as one of the few Parisians to welcome Emily and treat her almost as friendly as Mindy did. Still, Emily and Gabriel’s feelings for one another soured their friendship after Camille learned the truth about them during Emily’s birthday party in Emily in Paris season 2, episode 3, prompting her mother’s scheme that got her Gabriel by season 2’s end.
Season 3 introduced a new set of problems for Emily in Paris’s love triangle involving Emily, Gabriel and Camille, as Alfie was in the picture as Emily’s boyfriend and a new friend of Gabriel’s. However, things could not have seemed better for Gabriel and Camille, even as the latter began an affair with Sofia and Emily knew about it. Knowing about them put Emily in a difficult position, while also painting Camille in an unfavorable light, as Camille had Gabriel but cheated on him, baffling Emily as her actions often actively stopped Emily and Gabriel’s potential romance.
Camille Hiding The Truth About Her Pregnancy In Emily In Paris Season 4 Repeats A Seasons 2 Story
The Pregnancy Keeps Gabriel In Camille’s Life
Emily in Paris season 4, episode 5 delivered the shocking news that not only Camille isn’t pregnant, but she never was. Emily in Paris season 4 saw Camille welcome her new life with Sofia while also keeping Gabriel close because of the baby they were expecting together, but learning how there never was a pregnancy despite the positive test result effectively removed the reasons for Camille’s involvement in Gabriel’s life, at least based on Gabriel’s words, as he often highlighted his wish to keep Camille in his life because of their becoming a family.
Camille learning about not being pregnant in Emily in Paris season 4, part 1’s ending and telling her friend, who suggested not to tell Gabriel until she was ready, already established the possibility of Camille tricking Gabriel to keep him close. However, it was Camille’s behavior when offered champagne as Gabriel cheered to his not receiving a Michelin star that cemented Camille’s choice to resort to subterfuges, as she used a nonexistent baby as an excuse to refuse the alcoholic drink, thus lying to continue being in Gabriel’s life.
Emily in Paris season 4, episode 5 first introduced the potentiality of Camille tricking Gabriel into keeping her close, only to cement such an occurrence with Camille’s lies in the episode’s very end.
Such a development mirrored Camille’s scheme in Emily in Paris season 2, which ensured Emily would not make a move on Gabriel only for Camille to end up back together with him. However, while Camille could have faulted her mother for suggesting such a scheme to win Gabriel back, she cannot do so in Emily in Paris season 4, as it was her choice to lie so that she could continue being close to Gabriel. Camille’s lies mirror her season 2 scheme but also add to it, making her appear more devious because it was her idea alone to lie.
Emily In Paris Can’t Stop Making Camille The Villain
Camille Can’t Stay Away
Although Camille exploding by telling everyone the truth in Emily in Paris season 3’s ending essentially created the path for Gabriel and Emily to be together, the comedy cannot stop painting her as the villain. Such a perspective is noticeable from her choice to run away right after the engagement party, only to be found by Emily who guilt-tripped her into going back to Paris as everybody was worrying about her. While Emily was right in saying Camille never took responsibility for her actions, Camille’s every choice is painted as villainous in Emily in Paris.
Camille’s actions, especially going along with her mother’s scheme to end up together with Gabriel, were definitely unfair in Emily in Paris. That, cheating on Gabriel with Sofia and even interrupting Emily’s birthday party to accuse her and Gabriel of betraying her all proved how selfish Camille could be. However, Camille was also hurt by Gabriel and Emily’s behavior, and their lack of candor when dealing with their feelings. Camille’s side is never shown in Emily in Paris, with the comedy solely focusing on Camille’s faults while it doesn’t treat Gabriel and Emily the same way.
Emily in Paris never shows Camille’s side, focusing on her failings without doing the same with Gabriel and Emily.
Camille’s Inability To Let Gabriel Go Doesn’t Let The Characters Move On
It Hinders Camille’s Relationships
Whether Camille’s actions brought Emily and Gabriel closer or separated them, Camille is seen as unfair because of her methods, despite Emily and Gabriel being responsible for their fair share of mistakes that caused pain to others involved in their love triangle and external to it. Camille’s tendency to always gravitate toward Gabriel does not let her, Gabriel or Emily move on, and while it could make sense were Emily in Paris to bring Gabriel and Camille back together as equals, it still stops Camille from being shown as a tridimensional character, letting her be stuck in a villain role.
Emily in Paris season 3 making Camille the villain was a natural follow-up to Camille following her mother’s plan to secure Gabriel for herself. However, Camille continuing to be portrayed as a villain in season 4 can make Emily in Paris’s story go stale, especially as it’s unlikely for Emily and Camille to face off and the villain to be defeated, having the show that approach only for Sylvie’s business enemies. This can make Camille’s development a big problem for Emily in Paris season 4, as it risks pulling the comedy toward the same storylines.
Emily in Paris season 4, part 2 releases on Netflix on September 12, 2024.
