While The Walking Dead airs its final season, fans also have the Michonne and Rick Grimes spin-off to look forward to. After being introduced as being at odds with Rick’s group, Michonne evolved into a valid member of her own right and as Rick’s primary love interest.

Despite her popularity with the fanbase, some viewers have less-than-enthusiastic views of the character. These unpopular opinions range from questions over the quality of Michonne’s romance with Rick to how she holds up to the character’s comic book version.

Michonne’s Final Episode Wasn’t Good

Michonne’s exit is largely seen as one of the strongest episodes in later The Walking Dead seasons for focusing on her psyche. But Redditor venus6123 feels it was “very uncharacteristic of Michonne to leave her kids in the middle of a war.”

Michonne left to look for Rick, leaving Judith and R.J. at the community with little hint at where she was going. Audiences focused more on the revelation that Rick was alive over the manner of Michonne’s departure, so the Redditor’s comment does put into context how debatable her decision was.

Michonne’s Comic Book Version Is Better Than Her TV Iteration

Danai Gurira’s star-making performance has made the TV version the definitive iteration of Michonne that mainstream fans are aware of. However, Redditor AutistChan thinks that the “show Michonne was wasted potential. Michonne was a really amazing character in the comics.”

Michonne had a different arc in the comics where she was never Rick’s partner and even left the communities for some time. Although the show didn’t adapt these stories, it’s hard to argue against Gurira’s version since she instantly captured a large fanbase and became a core character until her departure.

Michonne’s Relationship With Rick Ruined Her Character

Michonne is responsible for bringing great change in Rick in The Walking Dead. But Redditor suphah thinks that, following Michonne’s romance with Rick, she “didn’t change or grow for the rest of the show, everything she did was tied to Rick.” Since the relationship added a new dynamic to her character, it’s rare to see much criticism in that direction.

To be fair, Michonne did have just about all of her storylines tied to Rick after they got together, although it wouldn’t be fair to say that she didn’t grow. After all, Rick brought the sensitive side out of her, and Michonne stopped being so aggressive to start thinking more rationally.

Michonne Isn’t Significant Without Rick’s Presence

Redditor canthelpmyself9 has made the bold claim of saying that “the show lost its way without Rick. Who even misses Michonne without Rick?” Considering she stuck around for more than a season in his absence, it wouldn’t be correct to state that Michonne was entirely dependent on him.

It’s true that Michonne’s stories didn’t have as much direction without Rick since they’d been a team for many seasons by that point, but the character was still in great focus afterward. Michonne was the representative of Alexandra, which was the primary community in the series.

Michonne And Rick’s Supply Run Episode Was Enjoyable

Redditor thesunshinest4te writes that the episode “with Rick and Michonne looking for supplies is underrated.” It was part of the seventh season when the show was criticized for its slow pacing, making this a hot take because The Walking Dead fans rarely watch the episode more than once.

Michonne and Rick spent the entire story rummaging around and mostly failing to find things of substance to offer to Negan. In the context of the whole story, though, the episode does bear significance because it has Michonne talking intimately with Rick about the consequences of being stuck under Negan’s thumb.

Michonne’s Departure Hasn’t Affected The Show

Michonne’s exit from The Walking Dead meant another member of the Grimes family was gone, leaving only Judith and R.J. on the show. But Redditor Buff_Azir doesn’t think it’s a big deal and that Michonne’s departure “hasnt really impacted all that much.”

To their opinion’s credit, Michonne left the show at the time when the Whisperer War was in full flow, meaning the story continued heading into the conflict as before. With so many characters still remaining, the blow from Michonne’s exit was softened but a lot of the fanbase still miss her for being one of the longest-running players on the board.

Michonne’s Character Doesn’t Have Depth

Michonne is known for her rebellious attitude, which later developed when she became a mother and a protector of the Alexandria community. Redditor SecondCreek has a different opinion, claiming that “her character is one-dimensional and she either just mumbles or glares at people.”

This was true to an extent for Michonne when she was originally introduced as part of her cynical nature when she hadn’t been treated kindly by others. But the fact that Michonne went on to forge genuine bonds with plenty of people within the group clashes with the Redditor’s opinion of her supposedly one-dimensional nature.

Michonne’s Departure Should Have Been Through Her Demise

The Walking Dead sets up Michonne’s story of reuniting with Rick as part of her exit. Since this also meant that the show has since kept mum about her whereabouts, Redditor PaceInternational335 thinks that “Michonne should have died instead of walking away.”

This is a wildly unpopular opinion because of Michonne’s big fanbase, and the fact that viewers want to see her reunited with Rick. What her demise would have done, though, is provide a big impact on the show and for Judith to take charge of herself. While most are happy that Michonne lived on, it would have been interesting for The Walking Dead to potentially kill her off.

Michonne And Rick Were Better As Friends

Michonne and Rick became the primary couple in The Walking Dead when they got together, especially after Glenn’s death broke up his coupling with Maggie. However, Redditor ig_marrijuana thinks that “there doesn’t seem to be romantic chemistry between the two. More like BFFs.”

The two had a very strong friendship before they became romantic, with Rick seeing Michonne as his confidante. Viewers had initially seen the pair as just friends due to the lack of romantic undertones, which is why some had to adjust to their new dynamic after they made things official.

Michonne And Andrea Had A Great Friendship

Andrea isn’t the most popular character in the series, with many feeling that she was holding Michonne back despite being one of the prominent friendships in The Walking Dead. Redditor des1gnbot has a different opinion, claiming that their “friendship had more chemistry than any of their hookups.”

Andrea and Michonne have both had love interests in the series, but the Redditor believes their dynamic was stronger than any of their romances. The Walking Dead later showed the conflict between Michonne and Andrea due to the latter’s feelings for The Governor, so this take certainly is a little out there.
