Rings of Power Star Shares Laugh-Out-Loud Secrets From Filming King Durin’s Fight Scene!

King Durin holds a ring in The Rings of Power

The opening scene of the Season 2 finale of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power was a powerful one for King Durin III and his kin. Ultimately, King Durin, played by actor Peter Mullan, succumbs to a Balrog as he leaps toward it with his ax. Mullan recently talked about that fateful scene with Empire and said it made him “laugh.”

In the Season 2 finale titled “Shadow and Flame,” King Durin’s son, Durin IV (aka Prince Durin), played by Owain Arthur, finds his father trying to crack into the Mines of Moria to find more mithril.Prince Durin hates that his father was corrupted by the Rings Sauron made for the Dwarves. Digging for more of the precious mithril would destabilize the entire mine, and the prince does not want his father to be controlled by his greed. Things take a turn when a Balrog comes and the king chooses to protect his heir to the throne. The Balrog kills the king and the subsequent shock wave from the act seals the cave shut.

Mullan: “I Got Quite Lucky”

Mullan said that as exciting as the scene was for viewers to watch, filming it was totally different. “I was killed by a bunch of disco lights,” he said. “You’re on this big set, and there’s a whole stream of flashing lights. I got quite lucky because at least I got something that intimated what was going to happen. It wasn’t the classic man-with-a-tennis-ball-on-a-stick,” he added.

King Durin Actor Says His Co-Stars Made Filming the Death Scene Easier

He said working with Arthur and Sophia Nomvete, who plays Prince Durin’s wife, Disa, helped him get through the tough scene. “What made it really easy for me was Owain and Sophia. They had to do all the crying-acting. That was quite cool, because you find out how much your fellow actors love you. If they don’t f***ing cry a lot, you can get quite upset. So, I hung around just to make sure that they were crying properly, which they both did, because they’re very beautiful people.”

It’s good fun, all that bollocks.

Mullan said seeing the finished project on screen was very different than filming it. “It made me laugh. It’s good fun, all that bollocks. I struggle to take all the fantasy stuff seriously, but it’s lovely to see that big, heroic ending for that wee guy,” he said.

The Rings of Power will return for a third season and showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay promise a “really strong” story is in the works for Season 3. McKay spoke briefly about the third season with GamesRadar+ and said, “…We’re very excited, but we can’t say anything other than we’re working on Season 3.” He added, “We have a story we think is really strong, and we’re hoping to turn it around as fast as possible.”

The first two seasons of The Rings of Power are streaming on Prime Video.
