Prior to the release of Outer Banks season 4, part 2, the show’s creators and cast have confirmed that the popular teen drama will be coming to an end after season 5. Outer Banks became a massive hit following its Netflix premiere in the spring of 2020, following the treasure-hunting misadventures and class conflicts of a group of teens, nicknamed the “Pogues,” living in North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Since that first hit season, Outer Banks’ main characters have gone on increasingly dangerous and high-stakes treasure hunts that often take them across the globe.
On November 4, 2024, Netflix confirmed that Outer Banks would be returning for a fifth and final season. Considering the consistent popularity of the show through Outer Banks season 4, part 1’s ending in October 2024, the announcement that the series is coming to a close may come as a surprise. However, it seems that Outer Banks ending with season 5 is the best avenue for the teen Netflix drama, as it follows the plan that was laid out long ago by the show’s creators.
Outer Banks’ Creators Always Envisioned A Five-Season Story (Netflix Didn’t Cancel It)
Ending With Season 5 Was The Show Creators’ Personal Choice
Though the news might seem sudden, Outer Banks’ conclusion isn’t due to Netflix canceling the show. Rather, the decision to end the story after Outer Banks season 5 appears to come from the series’ own showrunners and creative team. In a statement regarding the show’s confirmed ending (via Netflix Tudum), Outer Banks co-creators Shannon Burke, Josh Pate, and Jonas Pate confirmed that they had always envisioned the show with a five-season arc:
“From this beginning, we imagined a mystery that would lead to a five-season journey of adventure, treasure hunting, and friendship… Season Five will be our last season, and we think it will be our best yet.”
Not only did Outer Banks’ creators have a five-season plan from the start, but they also confirmed to Netflix Tudum that they have known what the final shot of the series will be “from the beginning.” It’s not often that show creators get to put their initial vision on the small screen just as they intended, which makes Outer Banks season 5’s renewal and ultimate decision to be the last somewhat of a rare gift.
This way, the creators get to have control over how their story ends and have a better opportunity to stick the landing, especially without being constrained by an early cancelation or pressure to stay beyond its welcome. From start to finish, the Pogues vs. Kooks story is being told how the creators imagined it, which increases the optimism for Outer Banks season 5 to craft a satisfying finale that wraps up John B, Sarah, JJ, Kiara, Pope, and Cleo’s arcs.
It’s Getting Harder To Believe That Outer Banks’ Actors Are Playing Teenagers
It’s The Right Time For Outer Banks To Come To An End
The passage of time also often plays a key factor in when a hit TV show opts to come to an end. Although Outer Banks’ creators confirmed that a five-season story was always the plan, it also seems like the right time to conclude due to the actors beginning to lose the credibility of playing teenagers. The age of the Pogues in Outer Banks season 4 is about 19–20 years old, but their actors have already well surpassed this.
OBX Season 4 Character Age
OBX Season 4 Actor Age While Filming
John B – 19 Years Old
Chase Stokes – 31 Years Old
Sarah – 19 Years Old
Madelyn Cline – 26 Years Old
Pope – 19 Years Old
Jonathan Daviss – 24 Years Old
Kiara – 19 Years Old
Madison Bailey – 25 Years Old
JJ – 19 Years Old
Rudy Pankow – 25 Years Old
Carlacia Grant – 33 Years Old
Rafe – 21 Years Old
Drew Starkey – 30 Years Old
John B actor Chase Stokes is already 32 years old, Sarah Cameron actress Madelyn Cline is almost 27, JJ actor Rudy Pankow is 26, Kiara actress Madison Bailey is 25, Pope actor Jonathan Daviss is 24, Rafe actor Drew Starkey is 31, and Cleo actress Carlacia Grant is 33 years old. It’s all too common to see actors in their late 20s and early 30s playing teens, but for a show that hinges on the comaraderie, youthful naïveté, and mindset of teenagers, the actors being believable for their characters’ ages is still an important factor in Outer Banks.
As sad as it may be for fans, it seems like the right time for Outer Banks ’ cast to explore different directions.
Not to mention, the decision to go ahead with Outer Banks’ five-season-only plan could be influenced by the cast’s desire to embark on different roles. Chase Stokes had a starring role in Netflix’s 2024 Uglies adaptation, Madelyn Cline took on a praised role in Netflix’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Madison Bailey has appeared in more horror roles, such as leading Netflix’s Time Cut cast, and Drew Starkey is starring in Luca Guadagnino’s acclaimed drama Queer. As sad as it may be for fans, it seems like the right time for Outer Banks’ cast to explore different directions.
What Outer Banks’ Creators Have Said About Season 5’s Story
The Blue Crown’s Treasure Hunt Continues In Season 5
So far, Outer Banks’ creators have been tight-lipped about what exactly season 5’s story will entail. However, they did mention that the Pogues’ hunt for the Blue Crown will continue through season 5, and “should carry [them] through all the way to the end.” Therefore, it’s unlikely that the Pogues will embark on a different treasure hunt in season 5. Rather, it seems the high-stakes hunt for the Blue Crown will become all the more complex and eventually take them back home to the Outer Banks, which is hopefully exactly where Outer Banks season 5 will conclude the Pogues’ story.
