Meghan Markle has spoken at length about her relationships with the other royals and has been particularly vocal about her bond with her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton
Since their decision to step back as working royals, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been quite vocal about the internal struggles they faced within the royal family.
From their explosive 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey to Harry’s bestselling memoir Spare, the couple has shed light on the challenges they encountered as working royals and the disputes they had with other senior members of the royal family. During their conversation with Oprah, Meghan dispelled a widely circulated story that she had caused Kate Middleton to cry in the run-up to her 2018 wedding with Harry. Instead, she claimed it was Kate who had left her in tears.
However, Meghan also acknowledged that Kate had apologized and described her as a “good person”. She further highlighted a perceived “polarity” where royal enthusiasts pitted the two women against each other. “If you love me, you don’t have to hate her. And if you love her, you don’t need to hate me,” Meghan stated. Despite this, tension between the Sussexes and the rest of the royal family persists.
Following the publication of Harry’s memoir – where he alleged his brother Prince William physically assaulted him during a disagreement over Meghan at Nottingham Cottage, and detailed the strained relations he and Meghan had with William and Kate – the couple were reportedly “evicted” from their UK residence, Frogmore Cottage, reports the Mirror.

Meghan has seldom returned to the UK since her and Harry’s royal departure, with exceptions including attending Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee – whom she has always spoken highly of – and accompanying her husband to the late Queen’s funeral. In 2022, Meghan sat down with The Cut to promote her podcast series, Archetypes, which was about to launch at that time.
She succinctly described her feelings about the other royals and her experiences living in the UK in two words, “Still healing.” This remark followed her observation that there were no legal restrictions preventing her from sharing her perspective on her time within the monarchy.
“It’s interesting, I’ve never had to sign anything that restricts me from talking. I can talk about my whole experience and make a choice not to,” Meghan noted. When news broke that Kate Middleton had started chemotherapy following major abdominal surgery, Meghan and Harry sent their wishes for “health and healing” to the future Queen, expressing hope that Kate’s request for privacy during this difficult period would be respected.
