It’s still hard for some of the show’s royals to recognize who they really are.
House of the Dragon ’s lead dynasty has always been of a pretty ambiguous opinion about their family’s biggest issue that could never really be resolved, but this time the problem comes in handy for Rhaenyra.
The second season’s episode 5 titled Regent ends on a major cliffhanger implying that Rhaenyra, backed by her son Jacaerys, will now dive deeper into paperwork seeking all possible allies for the Blacks among Dragonseeds scattered all across Westeros.
The scene does come as a crucial moment for Rhaenyra’s team ahead of the approaching war with the Greens, yet it also signals once again a major problem for Jace himself.
In the episode’s final scene, Jacaerys comes up with an idea of looking for more dragonriders who would potentially fight against the Greens alongside the Blacks. He then proves his point by stating that there are many Dragonseeds living in other houses across Westeros, and their origin might potentially help them to claim a dragon.
In George R.R. Martin’s fantastic land, Dragonseed is a common nickname for the Targaryens’ bastards whose blood is only half royal, yet they may still be considered the dynasty’s members under certain circumstances.
The whole dialogue between Rhaenyra and Jacaerys comes as yet another proof that the latter is well aware of his origin and, what’s more, aware of his inability to talk about it openly even with his mother.
House of the Dragon never even hid the fact that Jacaerys, just like his younger brothers Lucerys and Joffrey, is a bastard too.
Though he’s claimed to be the son of Rhaenyra and her suddenly vanished husband Laenor Velaryon, the show repeatedly implied that Rhaenyra and Laenor’s marriage was fictional since the latter was queer and the former had always strived for staying by her toxic uncle Daemon’s side.
Rhaenyra’s three older sons are a result of her relationships with Harwin Strong, but the issue is never addressed in an open manner at her court.
Upon the episode’s release, some viewers were quickly gathered by a discussion of the scene, united in their opinion that Jacaerys’ suggestion to search for more Dragonseeds across the country was actually a sweet recognition of his knowledge about his origin to Rhaenyra.
In a thread dedicated to the episode, a Redditor claimed that “there’s something poetic” about Jace’s attempt to say what he was thinking about without actually saying it with plain words, but eventually he and Rhaenyra “were both on the same wavelength in the end. Like “yo Mom if I can ride, then maybe others…”
Another user added that they did expect to see Jace bringing himself and his brothers up during that conversation, but then made a fair point suggesting that talks like this were surely a taboo even for the Targaryens’ intimate talks behind closed doors.
The first results of Rhaenyra and Jacaerys’ plan may demonstrate themselves in House of the Dragon’s next episode which is set to be released on July 21.
